The United States Capitol Police (USCP) safeguards the Congress, Members of Congress, employees, visitors, and Congressional buildings and grounds from crime, disruption, and terrorism.

This position is located in the Vehicle Management Division, Office of Logistical Services, Office of the Chief Administrative Officer.

The Automotive Mechanic Leader is responsible for performing a full range of mechanical repairs, servicing, and adjustments to a wide variety of fleet vehicles.

Performing and leading several Automotive Technicians, a Motorcycle Mechanic, and an Armored Vehicle Mechanic in the performance of work.

Ensure the work is distributed so that everyone in the work group is busy. Obtains needed information or decisions from the supervisor on problems that arise during the work process.

Advises workers to follow instructions received from the supervisor and to meet the established deadlines.

Ensure that safety and housekeeping rules are followed, including safe machine operation, and tools are properly utilized.

Checks work upon completion to ascertain whether the supervisor’s instructions on the work sequence, procedures, methods, and deadlines are met.

Keeps the supervisor informed of the work status and progress of work and causes of work delays; and addresses the supervisor’s questions regarding the overall work operations and problems related to additional on-the-job training requirements for members of the work group.

Oversee and lead the work group performing a wide variety of routine repairs, services, diagnostics, and adjustments to a wide variety of fleet vehicles.

Ensure the team performs timely preventive maintenance and service inspections for the entire fleet. Prepares and completes work orders, accounting for parts used.

Utilizes a wide variety of test equipment to trace, diagnose, and locate defects and determine the type and extent of repairs required.

Disassembles, inspects, and rebuilds components, as necessary, in completing tasks. Prepares product specifications and orders fleet specialty parts and supplies according to the approved process.

Physical Effort: Repair work requires the Automotive Mechanic Leader to work in tiring, awkward, and uncomfortable positions.

Frequently stands for long periods of time, bends, stoops, crawls under vehicles and makes repairs in other tight spaces.

Work requires frequent lifting, handling, and carrying parts and equipment weighing up to 40 pounds.

Occasionally, the work requires the ability to move moderately heavy items with assistance from or with mechanical devices, including objects weighing up to or over 50 pounds.

Work Conditions: The work is usually performed inside on concrete surfaces where there is exposure to drafts, noise, and fumes from vehicles.

Work may also be performed outside under adverse weather conditions.

The nature of the work involves continuous exposure to dirt, dust, and grease, and the potential for burns, chemical irritations, shocks, bruises, cuts, and strains.

The work requires the position’s incumbent to follow prescribed safety practices and use safety equipment such as safety shoes and glasses, and respirators, to avoid danger and irritations from exposure.
