Summary

This job involves repairing, fabricating, and painting the bodies of city vehicles and heavy equipment to keep them running smoothly for Seattle's public services.

It's a hands-on role in a supportive team environment with good benefits, ideal for experienced auto body professionals who enjoy working on a variety of fleet vehicles without high stress.

A good fit would be someone with solid skills in metalwork, welding, and painting who takes pride in quality repairs.

Key Requirements

  • Four years of experience under a journey-level Auto Body Worker or completion of an apprenticeship program
  • Knowledge of PPG waterborne basecoat system and paint mixing using PPG paint manager platform
  • Proficiency in repairing, replacing, and fabricating metal, aluminum, and fiberglass vehicle body sections
  • MIG welding skills for aluminum and sheet metal
  • Experience in priming, sealing, refinishing, wet sanding, polishing, and applying decals to vehicles
  • Ability to repair/replace damaged trim, mirrors, door glass, and prepare vehicles for painting including masking and blending panels
  • At least 5 years of experience in automotive repair, fabrication, and painting for competitiveness

The City of Seattle is seeking an Auto Body Worker (Automotive Sheet Metal Worker*) to join our team of highly skilled professionals that ensure vehicles stay on the road to help City departments provide services to Seattle citizens.

About Us:
Finance and Administrative Services (FAS) is often the public's first interaction with the City of Seattle, operating as a customer-focused front door that assists with everything from paying utilities or reporting a pothole to requesting public information or even adopting a new pet.

The 500-plus employees of FAS span across 10 divisions and work behind-the-scenes providing critical functions, like managing 120 City facilities—including police and fire stations—overseeing the City's neighborhood customer service centers and Customer Service Bureau and making sure minority-owned businesses can equitably compete for City contracts.

Requirements

This is a journey-level position responsible for repairing, fabricating, and painting of automotive body panels, frames and unibody structures on city owned vehicles.

You must have knowledge of PPG waterborne basecoat system, know the processes, procedures, tools, and equipment used in the repair process.

Repairs are performed under general supervision with special jobs reviewed by supervisor upon completion Repairs must conform to OEM specifications and must meet State and Federal standards.

Examples of job duties:

  • Repair, replace, and fabricate metal, aluminum and fiberglass vehicle body sections.
  • Mig weld aluminum and sheet metal.
  • Prime, seal and refinish body surfaces; wet sand & polish surfaces; apply department decals to department specific vehicles.
  • Refinish a variety of fleet vehicles and equipment other items include parts and equipment tools.
  • Repair and replace damaged trim, mirror assemblies, automotive door glass and replaces glass on large equipment.
  • Mix paint colors using PPG paint manager platform.
  • Prepare repaired vehicles for refinishing by applying primer, prepping and masking vehicle as needed; utilize knowledge of blending adjacent panels.
  • Maintain a clean, safe and efficient work environment; proper use of PPE; use basic Windows-based office software.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:
Four years’ experience working under a journey-level Auto Body Worker or completion of an accepted apprenticeship program.
Combinations of education and/or training and/or experience which provide an equivalent background required to perform the work will be considered.


The most competitive candidates will have at least 5 years of experience in automotive repair, fabrication and painting.


Work Environment/Physical Demands:

  • Work requires exposure to potentially hazardous equipment tools, toxic materials, fumes, grinding, dust, and paint.
  • Requires physical exertion and ability to lift objects weighing more than 50 pounds.
  • Required to work around heavy equipment.

License, Certification and Other Requirements:

  • Current Washington State driver's license.

Additional Information
The full salary range for this step progression position is $47.53 - $55.56 per hour. It is full-time, Civil Service represented, FLSA non-exempt and is eligible for overtime. Compensation is comparable to industry standards.

Driving Record: A current, “FULL” driving abstract from the Department of Licensing is required to be submitted upon offer of employment.

Current City of Seattle Employees in a driving position may be required to submit an updated abstract.

Pre-Employment Physical:
Successful candidates will be required to pass a pre-employment physical exam.
