Requirements

The professional in this position will audit all business taxes collected by the Department of Revenue by travelling to taxpayers’ record-keeping locations to examine the accounting, books, records, and original source documents to determine that the correct amount of tax has been remitted to the Department.

Primary Duties:
  • Conduct pre-audit work and develops an overall audit plan/strategy before engagement.
  • Perform field audits at the locations of extra small/small taxpayers regarding any Colorado taxes they are liable for. Occasionally assist higher level auditors in conducting audits.
  • Understand the administration, auditing, and enforcement of income, wage withholding, cigarette, liquor, lodging, severance, diesel, and all sales and use taxes administered by the Department.
  • Practice generally accepted accounting procedures, Department tax audit procedures, and sampling techniques.
  • Generate audit workpapers, write narrative reports, assemble the audit file for submission to reviewer and enter all audit adjustments in the computer software system.
The people hired for these positions will report to the nearest office location to them, taxpayer's office and as needed to the main DOR Denver office and offsite training facilities.

Minimum Qualifications:

Experience Only: Five (5) years of relevant experience in Finance, Auditing, Accounting, and/or Business Administration, or related experience in an occupation determined by the Department, or
Education and Experience: A combination of related education and/or relevant experience in Finance, Auditing, Accounting, and/or Business Administration, or related to the work assigned equal to five (5) years.


**Current, valid licensure as a CPA from the Colorado Board of Accountancy or current, valid CIA certificate will substitute for five (5) years of the requirement

Preferred Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will possess the following skills:

  • Experience with Microsoft Excel

  • State experience with GenTax

  • Ability to work independently

Conditions of Employment with the CDOR:

Employees are in a position of public trust in the performance of their job duties and must operate in a manner that maintains the highest standards of honesty, integrity, and public confidence.


As a condition of employment with the CDOR, all personnel must file all necessary Colorado Individual Income Tax (CIIT) returns and pay tax obligations, therefore all employees must undergo a pre-employment evaluation of their tax records/accounts to ensure compliance with this policy.

Final candidates must also complete a successful background investigation and reference check prior to appointment. Certain positions based on duties may require scheduled background investigations.


Pursuant to the Universal Driving Standards Policy, any worker who will be expected to drive a State-owned vehicle is responsible for maintaining a safe driving record and a valid driver license prior to driving any State-owned vehicle.

To be compliant with the new fleet vehicle policy, Motor Vehicle Records (MVRs) will be pulled for review for workers who:

  • Have an assigned State fleet vehicle

  • Are required to operate a vehicle as part of the position

  • Utilize a State fleet vehicle as a pool vehicle
