Job Description

Summary

This job involves helping produce books and digital content about South Carolina's past lawmakers, including researching facts, editing text, writing articles, and designing layouts to meet deadlines.

You'll collaborate with teams inside the agency and partners like libraries and publishers to get these materials printed and shared.

Full Job Description

Working under the direction of the Editor, this position will aid in the production of new volumes, both print and digital, of the Biographical Directory of the South Carolina House of Representatives and the Biographical Directory of the South Carolina Senate, as well as other publishing projects for the agency. Responsibilities include research, editing, writing, and graphic design to meet established publishing goals and timelines. This position also will work with other agency divisions and outside organizations including various libraries/archives, publishers, and distributors to ensure the production and distribution of the directories. This is not a remote work position. All work is to be performed at the SC Department of Archives and History in Columbia, SC.

Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in history, public history, or a related field.Experience conducting historical research, copyediting, writing, and proofreading.Excellent written and verbal communication skills, along with strong vocabulary, spelling, and grammar skills.Competency using Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, and Adobe Creative Suite (especially InDesign and Photoshop).Experience working with print publications.Experience working with specification sheets and style guides, especially the Chicago Manual of Style.Demonstrated ability to work independently and as a team member.High level of problem solving and organizational skills.Must be detail oriented.Interest in or knowledge of South Carolina history.

Qualifications Master’s degree in history, public history, or a related field.Experience in the editing and publishing of historical records.
