Job Description

Summary

This job is for an Associate Warden at a medium/maximum security prison in South Carolina, where you'll oversee daily support services like supplies, maintenance, medical care, education, and recreation for inmates.

It's ideal for someone with strong leadership skills and experience in corrections or similar high-stakes environments, who can step in for the top boss when needed and handle on-call duties.

Key Requirements

  • High school diploma with 10 years of experience in correctional, security, military, or police work, including 5 years of supervisory experience in corrections
  • Bachelor's degree may substitute for 4 years of overall experience; associate degree for 2 years
  • No substitutions allowed for the required supervisory experience
  • Must successfully complete 8 weeks of SCDC Basic Training upon hire
  • Must be certified by the SCDC Training Academy and complete the basic supervisory course within 6 months
  • Ability to perform Warden duties in their absence and serve on rotating on-call basis, including weekends

Full Job Description

  • Under limited supervision directs and manages support and program services of a med/max adult male institution.
  • Directs and manages supply, canteen, mailroom, maintenance, commissary, and medical functions to provide support to the institution.
  • Directs and manages educational, dental, recreation, horticulture, pastoral care and inmate organizations.
  • Performs duties of the Warden in his absence.
  • Serves as on-call official on rotating basis, including weekend duty.
  • Prepare (write) various reports, special studies and staff papers, including recommendations relating to proposed changes in policies, operating procedures, rules, regulations and laws.
  • Perform related duties as required.
Must successfully complete eight (8) weeks of SCDC Basic Training upon hire.

Requirements

State of South Carolina Minimum Requirements:

A bachelor's degree and supervisory experience in a correctional environment or relevant military experience. Relevant experience may be substituted for the bachelor's degree on a year-for-year basis.


SCDC Minimum Requirements:

  • A high school diploma and ten (10) years' experience in correctional, security, military, or police work, which must Include five (5) years of supervisory experience in a correctional environment.

  • A bachelor's degree may substitute for 4 years of overall experience.

  • Associate degree may substitute for 2 years of overall experience.

  • No substitutions for supervisory experience.

  • Must be certified by the SCDC Training Academy and successfully complete the basic supervisory course within six (6) months of entry into the position.
