Full Job Description

The Northern District of Alabama is currently seeking one attorney for a permanent Assistant United States Attorney (AUSA) position in our Appellate Division.

This position is located in the main office in Birmingham.

Birmingham is an area of rolling hills, beautiful lakes, downtown lofts, evening concerts in the park, nationally ranked restaurants, and an amusement and theme park.

As needed, additional positions may be filled using this announcement.

The ideal candidate will possess strong academic credentials, superior legal research and writing skills, quick analytical ability to accurately and precisely articulate critical case-related issues, high-volume briefing and appellate courtroom experience, outstanding organizational, time management, and interpersonal skills, the ability to work in a supportive and professional team environment with other AUSAs, support staff, and investigative agencies, and a demonstrated commitment to professionalism, ethics, civility, and public service.

Successful candidates will be computer proficient, capable of doing their own legal research and writing, and self-sufficient in preparing day-to-day correspondence and pleadings.

Relevant favorable experience includes oral advocacy skills. Required Qualifications: Applicants must possess a J.D. Degree, be an active member of the bar (any U.S.

jurisdiction), and have at least 1 year post-J.D. legal or other relevant experience. United States citizenship is required.

Major Duties:

AUSAs in the Appellate Division represents the USAO in the United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit, preparing briefs and participating in oral arguments before the Court.

The Division provides advice and handles most appeals to the Eleventh Circuit from both the civil and criminal cases prosecuted by the Office.

In addition to defending the criminal convictions and civil judgments obtained by the Office, the Appellate Division also brings affirmative appeals to the Eleventh Circuit from rulings adverse to the United States, after consultation with the Solicitor General's Office and Criminal or Civil Division of the Department of Justice in Washington, D.C.

Members of the Appellate Division also give advice and consult on legal matters with the United States Attorney and other attorneys in the Office.

You may also be assigned to work directly with a trial team of AUSAs on specific matters.

Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progress.

Security Requirements: Initial appointment is conditioned upon a satisfactory preemployment adjudication. This includes fingerprint, credit and tax checks, and drug testing.

In addition, continued employment is subject to a favorable adjudication of a background investigation.

Residency Requirements: Assistant United States Attorneys generally must reside in the district to which he or she is appointed or within 25 miles thereof. See 28 U.S.C.

545 for district-specific information.
