Full Job Description

Under general direction, provides legal services on behalf of the City of San Antonio. Working conditions are primarily in an office environment.

This position is an "unclassified" position and has no disciplinary appeal rights to the Municipal Civil Service Commission. This position is likewise subject to at-will employment status and can be terminated at any time for any reason.

  • Assistant City Attorney II: Salary starts at $77,910.30 annually
  • Assistant City Attorney III: Salary starts at $104,407.42 annually
  • Assistant City Attorney IV: Salary starts at $109,627.70 annually

Requirements

Advises City staff and elected and appointed City Officials in various areas of municipal law.Negotiates, drafts, and reviews contracts, real estate documents, and agreements.Drafts legislation, code provisions, regulations, ordinances, amendments, resolutions, and guidelines or policies.Attends public meetings of City Council, boards and commissions and advises and addresses members in executive sessions or makes public presentations.Advocates for the City in a wide variety of settings, including negotiations, dispute resolutions, mediations, trials, hearings, and administrative processes.

May prosecute on behalf of and defend the City in legal proceedings.Timely and appropriately responds to inquiries from the general public and media about public information and municipal regulations and procedures.Compiles data, statistics or other information related to legal work for reports.Performs other related duties and fulfills responsibilities as required.

  • Five (5) years of increasingly responsible experience as a practicing Attorney.
  • Years of full time municipal law experience may be substituted two (2) for one (1), up to a maximum of four years credit.
  • Licensed and in good standing to practice law in the State of Texas.

  • Valid Class 'C' Texas Driver's License.
  • Job Requirements Assistant City Attorney III
    • L.L.B. or J.D. Degree from an accredited school of law.
    • Ten (10) years of increasingly responsible experience as a practicing Attorney.
    • Years of full time municipal law experience may be substituted two (2) for one (1), up to a maximum of four years credit.
    • Licensed and in good standing to practice law in the State of Texas.
    • No substitution for education allowed.
    • Valid Class "C" Texas Driver's License.

    Job Requirements Assistant City Attorney IV
    • L.L.B. or J.D. Degree from an accredited school of law.
    • Fifteen (15) years of increasingly responsible experience as a practicing Attorney.
    • Years of full time municipal law experience may be substituted two (2) for one (1), up to a maximum of four years credit.
    • Licensed and in good standing to practice law in the State of Texas.
    • No substitution for education allowed.
    • Valid Class "C" Texas Driver's License.

    Additional Requirement

    Applicants for this position must pass a Criminal Justice Information Systems (CJIS) fingerprint-based background check and maintain CJIS eligibility.

    Due to CJIS requirements related to system access, the following will result in being disqualified for this position: Felony Convictions, Felony Deferred Adjudication, Class A & B Misdemeanor Deferred Adjudication, Class B Misdemeanor Convictions, an Open Arrest for Any Criminal Offense (Felony or Misdemeanor), and Family Violence Convictions.


    Preferred Qualifications
    • Knowledge of Texas Civil Law.
    • Experience in all aspects of civil trial work.
    • Experience in negotiation techniques and strategies.
    • Experience representing the City in all aspects of trial work including pre-trial discovery, motions, trial preparations, mediations, and trails.
    • Experience in researching, analyzing, and interpreting Municipal Service Rules, Administrative Directives, and all other city policies and procedure governing city employment.
    Applicant Information

    Unless otherwise stated, applicants are permitted to substitute two years of related full-time experience for one year of higher education or one year of related higher education for two years of experience in order to meet the minimum requirements of the job.

    One year of full-time experience is defined as 30 or more hours worked per week for 12 months.

    One year of higher education is defined as 30 credit hours completed at an accredited college or university.
