The University of Washington Division (UW) of the Office of the Attorney General is seeking an experienced attorney to join the Division’s Healthcare Team as an Assistant Attorney General (AAG).

Requirements

This position offers a unique opportunity to advise and represent UW Medicine’s multi-entity academic health system, along with UW’s Health Science Schools and its world class biomedical research community.

The Healthcare Team advises UW on a diverse array of healthcare and higher education issues, ranging from fraud and abuse and antitrust issues, to clinical contracting, insurance and reimbursement, medical staff matters, clinical risk management, medical privacy, student and trainee matters, federal executive orders and enforcement actions, strategic affiliations and more.

The team’s clients include UW Medical Center and Harborview Medical Center, Airlift Northwest, UW’s Graduate Medical Education program, UW Medicine’s strategy, external affairs, and finance teams, UW Medicine supply chain, and the Schools of Medicine, Dentistry, Nursing, and others.


The Healthcare Team currently includes five AAGs who report to a Managing AAG.

The team has a culture built on cooperation and collegiality and is part of the UW Division of the Attorney General’s Office.

The UW Division’s office is located in the University District in Seattle and is comprised of 19 attorneys, organized into three teams (General Practice, Employment, and Healthcare), and 10 support personnel.

AAGs across the Division’s teams routinely collaborate and jointly advise UW clients on complex matters.

Qualifications

In addition to meeting the requirements to serve as an Assistant Attorney General, candidates are preferred to have at least five years of legal experience, with experience in healthcare or higher education law preferred.

Applicants should have practical problem-solving abilities, strong interpersonal skills, and approach client advice with a sense of curiosity.

Attorneys who enjoy problem-solving in partnership with client workgroups and learning about new areas of law will enjoy our hard-working and collegial team.

We seek an active listener and quick study who is excited to represent an academic health system and has a strong interest in understanding the client's strategic interests.

The strongest candidates also will possess:

  • Superior communication skills (written and verbal);
  • Excellent judgment;
  • The ability to provide high-level, practical, and complex legal advice;
  • Top-notch analytical and advocacy skills;
  • High caliber research and writing skills;
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to successfully handle competing time-sensitive matters or manage multiple priorities under pressure;
  • The ability to establish and maintain productive working relationships with knowledgeable and high-level clients;
  • The ability to work independently as well as collaboratively with coworkers and clients; and
  • The ability to quickly learn new areas of law.

Applicants must have graduated from a law school accredited by the ABA or completed the WSBA's Rule 6 Law Clerk Program; and be licensed to practice law in Washington state.

Additional Information

This Assistant Attorney General position is represented by the Association of Washington Assistant Attorneys General (AWAAG) / Washington Federation of State Employees (WFSE) AFSCME Council 28, AFL-CIO.

AAG salaries are set between $82,212and $153,996. The exact amount is set in accordance with Appendix B of the AWAAG CBA.

The salary of an employee whose official duty station is Seattle would reflect 5% King County Assignment Pay per legislative action.
