Base salary range: $33,878 - $44,042

Note: Actual salary includes locality pay (15-40%+ depending on location).
This job involves helping veterans, families, and agencies by responding to requests for military records and providing accurate information from archives.
You'll review inquiries, investigate record issues, and work as part of a team to deliver top-notch customer service.
It's a good fit for someone detail-oriented with experience in customer communication and basic computer skills, or relevant education beyond high school.
This position is part of the National Archives and Records Administration, Military Reference Core.
The Core teams provide "World Class" customer service and are tasked with utilizing technical expertise related to military records for the benefit of veterans and their families, the military services and Federal, state and local agencies.
You must meet the following requirements within 30 days of the closing date of this announcement.
Specialized Experience for the GS-05: You must have at least one year of experience at the GS-04 level or equivalent that equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled.
Specialized experience for this position includes: Communicating to customer inquires, verbally or in writing; AND Using computer systems to locate items and/or using documentation to identify information relevant to a work assignment.
OR EDUCATION: You may substitute education for specialized experience as follows: 4 years above high school. OR COMBINATION: You may qualify by a combination of experience and education.
NOTE: Only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours (i.e., beyond the second year) is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirement.
One full academic year of study (30 semester hours) beyond the second year is equivalent to 6 months of specialized experience.
In addition to the above requirements, you must meet the following requirements, if applicable (as defined in 5 CFR 300, Subpart F): Advancement to positions up to GS-5: Candidates may be advanced without time restriction to positions up to GS-05 if the position to be filled is no more than two grades above the lowest grade the employee held within the preceding 52 weeks under his or her latest non-temporary competitive appointment.
Time After Competitive Appointment: Candidates who are current Federal employees serving on a non-temporary competitive appointment must have served at least three months in that appointment.
Major Duties:
The following are the duties of this position at the GS-06.
If you are selected at a lower grade level, you will have the opportunity to learn to perform all these duties, and will receive training to help you grow in this position.
As an Archives Technician, you will: Respond to a variety of types of requests for information regarding military service.
Conduct the initial review of incoming requests, which may include inquiries that involve fire destroyed or damaged records, Congressional inquiries, and/or highly sensitive requests regarding high-ranking governmental officials.
Analyze requests for information to identify the scope of inquiry. Investigate conflicting record information, apparent errors, and/or omissions of record data.
Participate as a team member in a variety of functions as determined by team decisions.
