This job is for an aircraft mechanic in the Air Force Reserve, where you'll maintain, repair, and assemble parts on military planes like transports, tankers, and fighters, while also serving as a reservist with monthly training weekends.
It's a full-time civil service role with federal benefits, but requires keeping up with reserve duties.
A good fit would be someone with hands-on mechanical experience in aviation who is reliable, physically fit, and committed to military service.
This is an Air Reserve Technician (ART) position. ARTs are part of the regular career civil service and enjoy all the benefits granted to Federal employees in the competitive civil service.
In addition, ARTs are required to maintain their active membership in the AF Reserve unit where assigned. ARTs receive on average one weekend of military training per month.

In order to qualify, you must meet the quality level of experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards Handbook X-118C for WG-8800 Aircraft Overhaul Family.
QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C for the WG-8800 Aircraft Overhaul Family.
Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most blue-collar positions, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying.
Qualification requirements emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time.
The screen out element for this position is the ability to perform the work of an Aircraft Mechanic with little or no supervision.
JOB ELEMENTS: Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas: 1.
Knowledge of equipment assembly, installation, repair of transport, tanker, bomber and/or fighter fixed/rotorwing aircraft.
Knowledge of applicable personnel, manpower, time and attendance, and budgeting instructions, guidelines, and requirements. 2.
Skill in use and maintenance of measuring instruments and various mechanics' hand tools. 3. Ability to read and interpret instructions, specifications, blueprints, and technical orders.
Ability to follow budgeting directives, instructions, and procedures. Ability to clean work area and/or job site upon completion of work. 4.
Knowledge of aircraft ground functional test procedures, to include launch and recovery operations. Knowledge of the makeup, operation and installation of a variety of aircraft assemblies.
Knowledge of tool, equipment and materials accounting and security. Knowledge 5.
Ability to determine when new aircraft assemblies should be installed, repaired, or reworked, and the extent of adjustment required.
Ability to detect and isolate malfunctions and to determine when new assemblies, components and parts of aircraft should be installed, reworked, repaired or adjusted. 6.
Knowledge of how a variety of aircraft parts, accessories and components are removed and assembled. Knowledge of the USAF Technical Order Program and its documentation procedures.
Knowledge of safety and security requirements as outlined in applicable safety standards, regulations and technical orders.
OTHER SIGNIFICANT FACTS: Other significant facts pertaining to this position are: 1. Performs other related duties as assigned. 2. This is an Air Reserve Technician (ART) position.
The incumbent is required to meet and maintain Air Force Reserve requirements. Work schedule will be aligned to allow incumbent to fully participate in unit training assemblies (UTA).
The incumbent's regular assignments are ART duties; however, the incumbent may be assigned some non-ART duties, generally not to exceed 30 percent of total responsibilities. 3.
May be required to fly in commercial and military aircraft to perform temporary/permanent duty assignments. FUNCTIONAL REQUIREMENTS: Heavy lifting (80lbs and over). Heavy carrying (45lbs and over).
Reaching above shoulder. Use of fingers. Both hands required. Hours of walking are 4 Hours/day. Hours of standing are 4 Hours/day. Hours of repeated bending are 4 hours/week.
Climbing, use of legs and arms. Both legs required. Operation of crane, truck, tractor, or motor vehicle. Near vision correctable at 13 inches to 16 inches to Jaeger 1 to 4.
Far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20 and 20/40 in the other. Depth perception. Ability to distinguish basic colors. Ability to distinguish shades of color. Hearing (aid permitted).
Hearing (without aid). If it can be otherwise accommodated, a specific physical condition or impairment will not automatically disqualify a candidate ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS: Outside.

PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work.

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Major Duties:
The primary purpose of this position is: to serve as an Air Reserve Technician (ART) Section Small Shop Chief no more than 25% of the time over journey level mechanics and to train reservists in the accomplishment of tasks set forth herein.
Performs small shop chief duties over the journey level mechanics in the section no more than 25% of the time. Diagnoses and corrects malfunctions of major and minor aircraft systems.
With assistance from specialists in occupations such as electronics, electrical and armament, uses power from external sources to test and check systems.
Performs organizational maintenance such as time compliance technical orders, home station checks, preflight, through-flight, and launch and recovery of aircraft.
Performs aircraft cleaning and corrosion control work. Works with a crew chief in the launch and recovery of aircraft.
