Job Description

Summary

This job involves leading a team as an expert mechanic who installs, repairs, and maintains heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems on ships and in industrial shops for the Navy.

You'll inspect equipment, use tools to test for issues, ensure everything meets safety and design standards, and train others on proper techniques.

Full Job Description

You will serve as an AIR CONDITIONING EQUIPMENT MECHANIC LEADER (EXPERT) in the Production Resources Department of PSNS and IMF.

Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most trade and labor occupations, you must show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying.

Qualification requirements emphasis is on quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time.

  • You will serve as an expert in installing nuclear and/or non-nuclear ventilation equipment in industrial shops and shipboard.
  • You will repair and overhaul industrial heating ventilation, and air conditioning systems requiring disassembly, inspection, and replacement of defective parts, reassembly, and bench testing of units.
  • You will perform as the subject matter expert performing inside shop work to inspect, test, stage, repair, modify, and/or install replacement parts for damaged filtered ventilation systems and components.
  • You will inspect individual parts, assemblies, or installations, using test and measuring instruments such as calipers, micrometers, pressure gauges, airflow measuring devices, photometers, and leak detectors.
  • You will test ventilation housings and connections for leaks, using pressure gauge or soap-and-water solutions. Inspects and tests systems to verify system compliance with plans and specifications, or to detect and locate malfunctions.
  • You will verify the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems are designed, installed, and calibrated in accordance with various blueprints, design specifications, engineering direction, and/or regulatory requirements.
  • You will exercise leadership skills to mentor, train and demonstrate to others proper trade techniques and practices, safety precautions when operating machinery/equipment, correct usage of precision instruments and measuring devices.
