Full Job Description

You will serve as a Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic in the Facilities Division of The Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS), Betheada, MD.

Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most trade and labor occupations, you must show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying.

Qualification requirements emphasis is on quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time.

This job has a screen-out element which will be used to determine minimum eligibility for this job.

  • You will install, maintain, modify, and repair special purpose HVJ\C+R systems that are frequently modified to provide specific and critical climatic conditions in laboratories.
  • You will apply my knowledge of the functions and operations of large-scale HVAC+R systems.
  • You will apply my skill to dismantle, repair, replace parts, reassemble, balance, and operate systems and components, as opposed to the general replacement of major units.
  • You will maintain and repair all system components, including compressors, air handlers, electric motors, pneumatics, DDCs, electric controls, evaporators, humidifiers, refrigerated air drivers, pumps, and refrigerated chillers.
  • You will dismantle components, visually inspect, test circuits and parts, and repair or replace malfunctioning elements.
  • You will reassemble components, reconnect them to the system, and then start up, test, balance, and set controls to provide the required conditions.
  • You will install, maintain, and repair mechanical, electrical, electronic, pneumatic, and manually operated components and equipment for large-scale HVAC+R systems.
  • You will install, repair, and modify pipes and ducts to redirect or provide air to areas with new requirements.
  • You will, while in the biohazard suite, maintain and repair electrical, lighting, plumbing, and HVAC systems to ensure the suite maintains proper pressure.
