Job Description

Summary

This job involves fixing, maintaining, and installing air conditioning and heating systems in large buildings and industrial settings at a military base in South Carolina.

The role requires hands-on work with complex HVAC equipment, including troubleshooting and electrical repairs, often in challenging environments like high places or tight spaces.

It's a good fit for experienced mechanics who enjoy practical, physical work and can handle it independently with minimal oversight.

Key Requirements

  • Ability to troubleshoot, maintain, repair, replace, or modify complex commercial and industrial HVAC systems without more than normal supervision
  • Experience performing the full scope of repair, overhaul, maintenance, installation, and relocation of industrial air conditioning, air compressors, and combination heating/AC systems
  • Knowledge of working with specialized air conditioning and heating equipment to control climate and temperature
  • Working knowledge to perform routine electrical repairs and installations
  • Physical ability to handle tools and equipment up to 50 pounds, climb ladders, and work in tiring positions like stooping or kneeling
  • Comfort working in varied conditions, including indoors, outdoors on tall buildings, cramped areas, and exposure to fumes, gases, and hazards (with provided protective gear)
  • US citizenship and ability to demonstrate relevant experience through application materials, including paid, unpaid, or volunteer work

Full Job Description

This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA to meet Critical Hiring Needs for recruitment and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service.

About the Position: This is a PERMANENT position as an Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic with the Directorate of Public Works, Fort Jackson, SC.

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. There is no specific length of training or experience required.

However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic ~ without more than normal supervision.

The ability to perform the most difficult and complex tasks and duties of air conditioning equipment mechanic which include troubleshooting, maintaining, repairing, replace and/or modify complex commercial and industrial HVAC systems.

- Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating. PHYSICAL EFFORT. Handles and carries tools, equipment and testing devices that seldom weigh over 50 pounds.

Work is normally performed at sites where most of the equipment can be reached from the floor or ladders.

The incumbent may occasionally use platforms, scaffolding, hoists, holders and pulleys in performing the work.

The position requires frequent standing, walking and climbing and occasional stooping, bending, kneeling and work in tiring or uncomfortable positions. WORKING CONDITIONS.

Most of the work is performed inside. Occasionally work is performed outside on top of tall buildings and in cramped areas with low overheads.

The incumbent is exposed to gas, smoke, ash, scalding water, carbon monoxide poisoning, gas, oil and sulfur fumes and toxic refrigerants.

Goggles, respirators, heavy aprons, hard hats, protective gloves, facemasks and protective clothing are provided to mitigate the adverse conditions and exposure to known hazards. Major Duties:

  • Performs the entire scope of work involved in the repair, overhaul, maintenance, installation and relocation of industrial air conditioning systems, air compressors, and combination heating/air conditioning systems.
  • Performs work on specialized application air conditioning and heating equipment to accomplish proper climatic and temperature conditions.
  • Must have a working knowledge to perform routine electrical repairs and installation
