Full Job Description

The Advanced Medical Support Assistant (AMSA) serves as a Medical Support for Business Office and has the ability to fully perform the duties/functions related to all aspects of the full performance Advanced Medical Support Assistant, GS-0679-06 position in Columbia and its Community Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOCs) under the Business Office Line.

Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.

English Language Proficiency: Applicants appointed to direct patient care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English.

Experience: Six months experience of clerical, office or other work that indicates the ability to acquire the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of the position; OR Education: One year above high school; OR Experience/Education Combination: Equivalent combination of experience and education are qualifying for entry level for which both education and experience are acceptable.

May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria).

Grade Determinations: Must possess one (1) full year (52 weeks) of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-05).

Advanced Medical Support Assistant (AMSA) position is an administrative foundational role for any outpatient area throughout the facility.

To include but not limited to Call Center, Primary Care, Operator Suite, Medicine, Surgery, Mental Health, Radiology, Audiology, Dental, Spinal Cord, Rehabilitation, Nutrition, Community Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOC), or any other non-Primary Care (PACT) area.

The purpose of the position is to facilitate health care needs, huddle with team members for directions, and respond to Veterans or family with instructions, appointments, or actions to be taken.

The AMSA works collaboratively in an interdisciplinary coordinated care delivery model within Outpatient Clinics.

The AMSA develops and maintains effective and efficient communication with the patient, interdisciplinary coordinated care delivery model teams, VA medical centers, and other agencies.

The AMSA is responsible for setting priorities and deadlines, adjusting the flow and sequencing of the work to meet the team and patient needs; he/she works with the team to reinforce the plan of care and self-help solutions and entering appropriate information into the electronic record; monitoring pre-appointment requirements to assure readiness for patient visit/procedure.
