This job is for an administrative assistant in a federal prison system's processing unit, where you'll handle paperwork, manage office supplies, and support leaders with financial and policy tasks to help keep operations running smoothly.

No advanced degree is needed, but practical office experience is key.

To be considered for the position, you must meet the following qualification requirements.
Education: As a general rule, education is not creditable above GS-5 for most positions covered by this standard; however, graduate education may be credited in those few instances where the graduate education is directly related to the work of the position.
OR Experience: You must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent in difficulty and complexity to the next lower grade level.
To be creditable, this experience must have equipped the applicant with the qualifications to perform successfully the duties of the position and must typically be in or related to the position to be filled.
Some examples of this qualifying experience are: Experience in various administrative procedures to include organizing and maintaining a workload, ensuring appropriate quantities of office supplies are available for office functions, and managing time and attendance for a department.
Experience in preparing and reviewing correspondence, policy material, tables and reports and ensuring grammatical accuracy and conformance to established standards.
Experience conveying technical information related to personnel/payroll processing to individuals in the organization and the general public.
Experience working with various programs such as Excel, Adobe, Microsoft Outlook, and various office equipment. If applicable, credit will be given for paid and unpaid experience.
To receive proper credit, you must show the actual time (such as number of hours worked per week) spent in the activities.

Responsible for providing technical and administrative support for the Consolidated Processing Unit (CPU) and assisting the Chief and Deputy Chiefs with various administrative functions related to financial and other administrative operations of the unit.
Provides administrative assistance with policy and program development and modification, responding to issues raised by line staff and managers.
Performs administrative functions in furtherance of the mission and objectives of the CPU. Responsible for receiving and screening all correspondence arriving at the CPU.
Types correspondence, memoranda, meeting minutes, policy materials, tables, reports, travel requests or vouchers, or other similar materials from handwritten copy, rough copy, or typewritten materials.
