Full Job Description

The Accounting Technician position is part of the Finance Service.

The duties are performed for the G.V.(Sonny) Montgomery VA Medical Center providing medical center accounting and/or VISN accounting support responsibilities.

The position is responsible for conducting accounting and financial analysis of financial data received and compiled at the health care system, including outlying outpatient clinics, Veteran's centers, and the VISN 16 office.

Duty location: Flowood, MS. To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 03/20/2026.

Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement.

For a GS-7 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-6. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service.

An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials.

If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement.

In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade.

Note: Time-In-Grade requirements also apply to former Federal employees applying for reinstatement as well as current employees applying for Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998 (VEOA) appointment.

You may qualify based on your experience as described below: Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-6 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization.

Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: Experience with accounting principles, methods, procedures and techniques; validating transactions and performing research to resolve inconsistencies; examining accounts to analyze and detect trends and problems; experience using spreadsheet applications; and using various accounting system software package applications and computer systems to resolve problems of processed transactions.

Physical Requirements: The work is primarily sedentary with some walking, standing, and bending. The Accounting Technician may be required to lift and move files/printouts.

Major Duties:

The duties of the Accounting Technician position include: Executes projects involving interpretation and implementation of policies and procedures.

Examines, verifies, and maintains financial accounts and accounting data and classifies transactions. Researches, interprets and verifies appropriation and general ledger accounts.

Determines accounts affected and the debit and credit entries to be made. Prepares reconciliations of accounts, accruals, adjustments and reports.

Maintains control of funds obligated and funds expended. Summarizes transactions and prepares documents reflecting the entries to be made.

Documents financial transactions to assure a proper audit trail. Reviews pending items and ensures follow-up action. Establishes routines for input of transactions.

Ensures timely preparation of reports for internal and external agency customers. Coordinates travel plans with a contract travel service.

Uses various financial systems, software applications and web-based programs. Reviews procedures and suggest changes. Acts as liaison between contractors, external agencies and associates.
