Accounting Technician 1 - Medical Billing
What You Will Be Doing:
Under the direction of Alaska Psychiatric Institute’s (API) Accountant 3 (PCN 060669), the Accounting Technician 1 performs technical and specialized examination of medical accounting and performs billing for institutional and professional claims using the EHR (Electronic Health Record) specialized custom psychiatric hospital software (MT – Meditech) through the B/AR (Billing/Accounts Receivable) module and billing through a 3rd party vendor clearinghouse (SSI) for electronic and paper submission of patient claims.
API is an inpatient psychiatric hospital licensed and accredited as an 80-bed psychiatric hospital in the State of Alaska which has forensic, adult, and adolescent units to support the mentally ill population from a diverse demographic.
The position will review, audit, and submit medical claims, following standards and guidelines set by the supervisor.
In addition, this position will review denied medical claims for appeal or write-off and navigate payer portals and resources for clarification and appeal.
Also, this position will enter and reconcile payments for medical claims in our hospital information system.

Who We Are Looking For:
We are looking for a candidate with the following competencies:
• Accounting: Knowledge of traditional accounting practices including accrual, obligations, and costs methods.
• Accounting Operations: Knowledge of general ledger accounting and the control/subsidiary account relationships and reconciliation techniques, including accounts receivable, accounts payable, medical billing & coding, and disbursing officer's accountability.
• Principles of Accounting: Knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles, standards, and practices (for example, double entry accounting, accrual accounting), including the full accounting cycle and the preparation of work sheets, financial statements, ledgers, and journals.
• Analysis and Assessment: Uses information technology in accessing, collecting, analyzing, maintaining, and disseminating data and information.
• Problem Solving: Identifies and analyzes problems; weighs relevance and accuracy of information; generates and evaluates alternative solutions; makes recommendations.
