This is professional level accounting work in maintaining accounting and financial records.

Work requires a basic understanding and application of the theories, principles, and practices of accounting and financial management which is gained through degree granting schools, or an equivalent level of practical knowledge gained through experience .

Contacts require basic courtesy, tact, and effectiveness in dealing with others, and include contacts to request or provide information, ask questions, or obtain clarification.

May oversee others by scheduling, assigning, monitoring, and reviewing their work.

The work is standardized in that tasks are covered by substantially diversified procedures and specialized standards, and because of changing priorities, or different situations, workers have the latitude to consider which of the many procedures or standards should be followed and in what sequence.

The work involves differing situations requiring the use of judgment in searching for solutions or new applications within one's known experiences. Work is performed in an office environment.

Operates standard office equipment such as personal computer.

The physical demands consist mainly of sitting or standing at a workstation for extended periods of time and occasionally lifting and moving light objects.

The work is performed under limited supervision where the work assignments are subject to established procedures, practices, precedents, methods, techniques, standards, and/ or well-defined policies.

The worker plans and organizes the work, determines their own priorities, and the work is reviewed, usually after the fact, in terms of quality, volume, timeliness, and for adherence to established methods, standards and policies.

Requirements

  • Maintains financial records, accounts, ledgers, and journals.
  • Develops new and modifies existing accounting procedures.
  • Analyzes and audits accounting and fiscal data, records, and reports.
  • Prepares journal entries and posts transactions to proper accounts.
  • Prepares summaries, trial balances, and related reports and statements.
  • May supervise preparation and maintenance of payroll
  • records and pay vouchers.
  • Receives funds, prepares deposits, and reconciles bank statements.
  • Schedules, assigns, monitors, and reviews the work of others.
  • Operates standard office equipment such as personal computer using word processing, spreadsheet, database, and various accounting related software, copiers, and calculators.
  • Conducts field audits and prepares comprehensive reports.
  • Reconciles and balances financial statements and accounting records and ledgers.
  • Assists with preparation and monitoring of operating budgets.
  • Composes correspondence.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in the City of Jacksonville’s competencies.
  • Performs related work as required.

Qualifications

Additional Information

  • Four (4) years of education and/or experience in accounting which includes successful completion of 15 semester hours of accounting course work at the college level from an accredited institution.
  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited institution in accounting is preferred.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
  • The probationary period for this class is six months.
