Requirements

Why it's a great opportunity: In this vital role serving Pierce County’s 3,500 employees, you will be responsible for the administration of claims for the County’s self-insured workers compensation program.

You will frequently interpret and apply state rules and regulations, including RCWs and WACs.

You will also develop and coordinate workers compensation claims processes in partnership with attorneys, Human Resources, Washington State L&I, and the County’s third-party administrator (TPA) to determine appropriate medical care and time loss benefits provided to injured employees.

Utilizing software such as Workday, CorVel’s CareMC system, Origami, and Excel will assist in tracking and reporting data for your analysis.

Your expertise, efforts, and training of staff will keep our employees and leaders up to date on our Workers Compensation Program.

Core daily responsibilities:

  • Serve as primary relationship manager with County’s TPA and ensure they are reviewing all claims to ensure that all medical treatment, time loss compensation, vocational services, and permanent partial disability awards are appropriate and comply with industrial insurance law.
  • Provide details to Human Resources and other Departments for the purpose of developing a light-duty return-to-work program to make light-duty job offers.
  • Explain industrial insurance law and L&I requirements to employers. Work directly with injured workers to guide them through the workers compensation process.
  • Maintain a high level of productivity and confidentiality.
  • Attend depositions, settlement conferences, and hearings. Provide settlement authority within scope and consult with the Risk Manager for settlement outside of your authority.
  • Review appropriate claim reserves and manage reserve adequacy throughout life of claim.
  • Act as the primary liaison with internal and external stakeholders to manage Workers Compensation claims and regulatory requirements.
  • Collaborate with and provide recommendations to the Risk Manager on major decisions requiring review and approval.

Qualifications

  • Four (4) years of progressively responsible professional experience in workers compensation, accident investigations, contract assessments, safety or risk management audits, or other closely related field including workers compensation program management.
  • Postsecondary education in public safety, human resource management, public or business administration, or closely related field may substitute for up to two (2) years of the required experience on a year-for-year basis.
