Job Description

Summary

This job involves crafting wooden containers and crates to safely pack and secure military equipment and machinery at an Army depot in rural Northern California.

Workers select lumber, measure and cut it, assemble items, and install bracing to handle heavy or irregular loads.

It's a good fit for hands-on individuals with basic woodworking experience who can work independently under supervision and don't mind physical labor in varying weather conditions.

About the Position: About the Position: Sierra Army Depot is located in Herlong CA, a rural town in Northern California.

Herlong is approximately 60 miles north of Reno, NV, and 35 miles south of Susanville, CA. The depot serves as an Army Expeditionary Logistical Support Center. Employees work Mon-Thurs, 0630-1700 hrs.

Youth Facilities and childcare available. Mass transportation is available at minimal cost. Surrounding area boasts a full range of outdoor sports/recreation activities.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Wood Worker ~ without more than normal supervision.

I have the ability to perform common duties such as manufacturing wooden containers for production. I can fabricate custom containers to secure freight.

I work under normal supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed.

- Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating. Physical Effort: Performs heavy, strenuous, and tiring work for extended periods.

Incumbent continuously lifts, carries, positions, holds and uses tools, equipment and materials weighing up to 44 lbs. and moves heavier items using tools, MHE, or with assistance from other workers.

Work requires ability to stand, stoop, climb, bend and reach. Working Conditions: Works inside vans, rail cars, warehouses, igloos, etc., and in outside areas.

Frequently exposed to unpleasant extremes of heat and cold and inclement weather 'conditions and to dirt, dust, grease ,and sand.

Exposed to noise hazards, to Irritation from dust and sawdust and to possible injuries.

Must wear necessary protective and safety equipment such as safety glasses, face shields, safety shoes, gloves, hearing protection, and other equipment and clothing when required.

Works in woodworking shop that is generally heated, lighted and ventilated.

Exposed to noise hazards(hearing protection required), dirt, and irritations from fumes, glues, bonding agents, paint, stains, varnish, sawdust, splinters, etc.

Subject to possible accidental injury such as cuts, loss of fingers, broken bones, bruises and possible death from operating shop power equipment, from falls and falling lumber, tools, etc.

Must wear necessary protective and safety equipment such as safety glasses, face shields, safety shoes, and other equipment and clothing. Major Duties:

  • Choose lumber from available supplies and measure, cut and assemble items in accordance with orders.
  • Secure freight such as heavy, unbalanced machinery, vehicles, and equipment.
  • Install blocking and bracing against nonrectangular, irregular, slanted, sloped, or curved walls, floors, sides, overhead areas, etc.
  • Block and brace, and secure uncrated, un-containerized equipment which is sensitive, hazardous, or unusually large or heavy, and is frequently unbalanced or fragile.
  • Construct and improvise special jigs, forms, templates or patterns.
