Summary

This job is for a wildland firefighter who works to prevent, control, and put out fires in forests and wild areas, often involving physical outdoor tasks in tough conditions.

Public Notice for positions being filled under the Direct Hiring Authority (DHA) for Wildland Fire: Applications will be accepted for each location listed in this announcement.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS for GW-05: NOTE: If your firefighting experience includes both structural and wildland, it is essential that your application materials clearly separate and document your wildland experience One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS/GW-04 level in the federal service.

Examples of specialized experience include: Forestry aid or technician work; engineering, range, or soil conservation technician work that involved application of cultural, resource conservation, or land management practices; farming or ranching work that provided a basic understanding of land use and involved the application of cultural and soil and water conservation practices; forest or range fire control, prevention, or suppression work.

-OR- At least a full 4-year course of study (120 semester hour or 180 quarter hours) leading to a bachelor's degree with major study in forestry, range management, agriculture or a subject-matter field directly related to the position that includes at least 24 semester hours of course work in related course work such as forestry, agriculture, crop or plant science, range management or conservation, wildlife management, watershed management, soil science, natural resources (except marine fisheries and oceanography), outdoor recreation management, civil or forest engineering, or wildland fire science.

No more than 6 semester hours in mathematics is creditable. -OR- Equivalent combination of education and experience.

For example, I have six months of the specialized experience described in A above (50% of the experience requirement), and three years of college study from an accredited institution, which included at least 12 semester hours of related coursework as specified in B above (50% of the qualifying education).

NOTE: Only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours of a course of study leading to a bachelor's degree is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirements.

In order to be considered for this position, copies of your Incident Qualification and Certification System (IQCS) Master Record (or equivalent training documents) which contain documented proof of the certification or attainment of the IFPM Selective Placement Factor for this position MUST be attached to your application.

Red cards are not acceptable documentation. Currency Requirement: Required to maintain currency once hired into the position. Currency of NWCG qualifications is not required for selection.

If not currently qualified, the applicant must provide documented evidence that they have been fully qualified in the past and are able to regain currency within one year of being hired.

Failure to provide this documentation will result in disqualification.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social).

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

To receive consideration for this position, you must provide updated required documents and meet all qualification requirements by the closing date of this announcement. Major Duties:

Career-Seasonal appointments are permanent positions and include the same benefits as Career appointments, but do not provide work on a year-round basis.

Selectee is guaranteed to work at least 6 months per year but not more than 50 weeks per year, with the work schedule determined upon appointment.

Work schedule and periods of non-pay status are contingent upon funding and operational needs.

On an annual basis, employee signs a "career-seasonal" agreement with the supervisor which defines the work schedule for that year.

Positions at the following locations are Career Seasonal 18/8: Meaning there is a guaranteed 18 pay periods in pay status and can be up to 8 pay periods in non-pay status.

Career-Seasonal appointments are permanent positions and include the same benefits as Career appointments, but do not provide work on a year-round basis.

Joshua Tree National Park (non-pay approximately March - May) Mesa Verde National Park (non-pay approximately November - February) Mojave National Preserve (non-pay approximately March - May) Zion National Park (non-pay approximately November - February) You are expected to be in non-pay status approximately 16 weeks/8 pay periods.

locates fireline, directs and participates in fire line construction, backfiring and burnout operations, engine operations, tree falling and holding/patrol mop-up operations.

May drive engine to fire locations over unimproved roads. Gathers and considers information on weather data, topography, fuel types, and fire behavior in responding to wildland fire incidents.

When positioning and deploying personnel and equipment, recommends best approaches and practices to use in protection of the values at risk.

Responsible for operation and maintenance of specialized equipment used to respond to wildland and prescribed fire situations.

Performs or instructs others in preventative maintenance inspections and basic repairs of vehicles and equipment. Accomplishes emergency repairs as necessary to permit continued use of equipment.

In those instances when the apparatus cannot be used effectively in suppressing the fire, the incumbent takes appropriate control action in attacking the fire.
