Summary

This job involves performing various types of welding on metals like steel and aluminum to maintain and repair naval equipment at a military facility in Mississippi.

Full Job Description

You will serve as a Welder in the EXPEDITIONARY MAINTENANCE CENTER of NAVAL FACILITIES ENGINEERING AND EXPEDITIONARY WARFARE CENTER.

Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most trade and labor occupations, you must show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying.

Qualification requirements emphasis is on quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time.

Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the job elements and screen out listed below.

This job has a screen-out element which will be used to determine minimum eligibility for this job.

Applicants who do not receive a minimum of two points on the screen-out element(s) will be found ineligible.

  • You will use acetylene, heli-arc and electric welding torches, performing tube, cluster, butt lapped and flange welding on all types of metal including aluminum, steel, copper, brass, and cast iron.
  • You will lay out work from blueprints, sketches, work orders or oral instructions and study future projects to determine the exact size and type of material to be used; selecting the proper type of welding process to be utilized.
  • You will weld in vertical, horizontal, flat and overhead positions. After welding is finished, you will remove slag from line of weld and smooth welds with grinding wheels or hammers.
  • You will operate various types of alternating and direct current electric arc welding equipment, portable, automatic and semi-automatic, with carbon and metallic electrodes and including particularly inert gas shielded and flux shielded methods.
  • You will operate gas cutting hand torch or portable electric arc cutting machine to trim parts before welding to insure proper alignment or fit, to remove obstructions or to cut materials when necessary on site.
