Summary

This job is for a registered nurse at a veterans' home in Spokane, Washington, where you'll provide hands-on care to elderly veterans, including helping with daily activities, giving medications, and keeping accurate health records.

Registered Nurse 2

Full Time-Permanent

Help us continue to fulfill our mission of "Serving Those Who Served" by providing essential quality of life care for our Veterans! We are now accepting applications for a Registered Nurse 2 at the Spokane Veterans Home!

Homes 24/7 facility differential pay: Updated as of July 1, 2025: This position is eligible for "Supplement Basic Shift Premium" for 24/7 Facilities.

Employees who are assigned to a facility that provides direct care to residents, patients, and/or clients and whose duties are required to be performed on location will receive an additional one dollar ($1.00) per hour of supplemental basic shift premium for each hour of basic shift premium.

This shift premium does not apply to overtime hours. The supplemental basic shift premium shall expire on June 29, 2027.

*This position has been posted within the assigned pay range through Step W. Step X has not been published as this is considered the longevity step, in alignment with state HR compensation rules.

Position Schedule: The work schedule will be Tuesday through Saturday, 2:00 pm to 10:30 pm.

Hybrid/Telework: This position is not eligible for hybrid telework.

These locations provide Medicare and Medicaid nursing home care to honorably discharged veterans, including, in some instances, their spouses, widows, or Gold Star.

As a Registered Nurse 2, you'll assist in the delivery of nursing and nursing-related care to vulnerable Veterans in need of skilled nursing care. You'll have the ability to lend direction and a caring attitude to your patients. You will also assist and monitor assigned residents with activities of daily living based on current nursing standards of practice and with a heart for our mission.

Requirements

Some of what you'll do:
  • Maintain healthcare records according to current policies and procedures.
  • Administer medications and treatments for residents unable to do their own or monitor self-pour medications of residents.
  • Maintain incident log and provide learning experiences and feedback regarding incidents for direct care staff on unit.
  • Encourage and empower residents and staff to meet residents' needs and requirements in a respectful and homelike environment.
  • Maintain open communication and information-sharing with staff.
  • Assist in the presentation of training materials to staff.
  • Perform nursing assessments of residents as necessitated by the condition of the resident, and on a quarterlybasis for the completion of the Minimum Data Set.
  • Assume responsibility for self-development by awareness of new techniques and medications.
  • Make rounds on a regular basis to ensure compliance with expectations of the unit.
  • Hold the staffing book as assigned.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Currently holds a valid RN license from the State of Washington.
  • Graduation from an accredited school of professional nursing.
  • One year of professional nursing experience.
A combination of education and experience may be considered on a year-for-year basis. Experience must be relevant to the position.
  • Must be able to use accurate methods and practices of nursing and restorative care; personal hygiene and sanitation methods, record keeping, report preparation, infection control procedures and resident rights.
  • Must be able to assess, evaluate, and participate in the development of appropriate plans of care. Plan, implement, and document appropriate discharge planning for residents when appropriate. Perform selected nursing procedures.
  • Must be proficient in the English language and be able to read, write and speak English.

Preferred/Desired Qualifications:

  • One year of experience as an RN.
  • Must be able to provide a positive living environment for residents relating to meeting psychosocial needs; follow written and verbal directions; document and report observed changes in patient condition and behavior.
  • Must be able to earn trust, respect and confidence of residents, coworkers and customers through consistent honesty, forthrightness and professionalism in all interactions. Serve as an effective and positive role model to staff.
  • Long term care experience.
Special Requirements:
  • Must be able to pass criminal background check, prior to hire and every 2 years, in accordance with DVA Policy 615.000 Criminal History Background Checks.
  • Must comply annual Tuberculin Screening in accordance with DVA policy 670.600 Tuberculosis Testing.
  • Requires medical evaluation, fit testing, training, and use of respiratory protection as required by Washington Industrial Safety and Act standards. Must be able to wear a respirator, medical gloves, gowns, eye protection, and other personal protection as required by a job or task.
  • Maintain a valid RN License from the State of Washington.
  • Remain Current on CPR
  • Capable of lifting up to 60 lbs. using proper techniques, capable of reaching for activities such as repositioning or to gain access to supplies and is capable of pushing or pulling with sufficient strength.
  • Employees must be able to walk, sit, and bend in an unrestricted manner on a consistent basis during the entire workday.
  • Maintain regular and reliable attendance.
  • Successfully complete, within mandated timeframes, employee orientation and all other mandatory annual, in-service, and other required training.
  • Become familiar and comply with all DVA policies and procedures and Collective Bargaining Agreements as applicable.
  • Must sign the confidentiality statement for all employees.
