Job Description

Summary

This job involves helping crime victims and witnesses navigate the legal system by providing support before and during court proceedings, assessing their needs, and connecting them to resources.

It also includes working with law enforcement and social services to expand available help for victims.

A good fit would be someone with experience in victim support, social work, or criminal justice who is empathetic and good at building partnerships.

Key Requirements

  • One full year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-09 level, including assisting crime victims and witnesses during court hearings and trials
  • Assessing needs of victims and witnesses and providing routine referrals to services
  • Supporting outreach and collaboration with local, state, federal law enforcement, and social service organizations
  • Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in a related field (e.g., Criminal Justice, Criminology, Law, Social Work), or 3 full years of graduate education leading to such a degree, or LL.M.
  • Combination of graduate education (in excess of 2 years) and specialized experience to meet qualifications
  • Eligibility under ICTAP or CTAP for displaced federal employees, requiring proof and a well-qualified score of 85+
  • For veterans under VEOA: honorable separation, preference eligibility, or 3+ years continuous active military service with DD-214

Specialized Experience: To be eligible at the GS-11 level, you must have one full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-09 level in the Federal sector.

Specialized experience is defined as providing routine assistance to crime victims and witnesses before or during court hearings and trials, and, assessing their needs for assistance; providing routine referrals to crime victims, their families and witnesses; and, supporting outreach and collaboration efforts with local, state and federal law enforcement personnel and social service organizations to increase resources and services to serve crime victims.

Education: One of the following types of education in a related field (e.g., (e.g., Criminal Justice; Criminology; Law; or Social Work): a Ph.D.

or equivalent doctoral degree, or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree, or LL.M.

Combination of Specialized Experience and Education: Combinations of successfully completed graduate education and experience may be used to meet total qualification requirements.

In order to qualify based on a combination, graduate education must be in excess of 2 full years Interagency Career Transition Assistance Plan (ICTAP)- The ICTAP provides eligible displaced Federal competitive service employees with selection priority over other candidates for competitive service vacancies.

If selected for this position, you will join a well-respected team in the Victim Witness Unit responsible for the District's Victim Witness program.

Typical work assignments will include: - Determining program eligibility for victim and witness services. - Assisting Assistant U.S.

Attorneys in locating victims and assessing their ability to testify in court proceedings. - Providing in-court support to victims during and prior to hearings and trials.

- Coordinating with Federal, state and local law enforcement and victim service providers in establishing comprehensive assistance plans to support victims.

- Conducting victim assistance workshops, seminars, presentations and meetings with law enforcement personnel, Federal investigative agency victim specialists, state and local officials and members of community organizations.

Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progress.
