Full Job Description

Charles Towne Landing State Historic Site sits on a marshy point, located off the Ashley River, where a group of English settlers landed in 1670 and established what would become the birthplace of South Carolina. Charles Towne Landing introduces visitors to the earliest colonial history of Charleston. Interact with hands-on exhibits in the Visitor Center, talk to knowledgeable staff members, and take a walk on the self-guided history trail.

Job Purpose and Duties:

Under general supervision, the veterinary technician will assist the staff veterinarian on needed medical procedures, medication administration and any other tasks deemed necessary by the veterinarian. This position is also responsible for the daily husbandry of animals in the Animal Forest. Performs vaccinations and treatments as directed by veterinary. Assists with security, maintenance, and general management of the Animal Forest. Supervises the Animal Forest in the absence of the Animal Forest Curator.

1) Supervises and participates in the daily feeding and care of animals in Animal Forest. Prepare proper diets for all animals. Record keeping of food intake, vaccinations, de-wormers and medications, general health and behavior of animals. Oversee the daily operations in the absence of the Animal Forest Curator.
2) Supervises and participates in animal cage and habitat maintenance, trail and facility upkeep.
3) Administer vaccinations, medications and treatments. Assist consulting veterinarian with surgery as needed in the field.
4) Maintain integrity of the Vet Clinic.
5) Responsible for maintaining inventory of supplements, medications and all veterinary supplies.
6) Keep up-to-date on all training and continuing education credits related to maintaining veterinary technician license.
7) Practice and promote teamwork within the work unit/office, throughout the agency and with external agency stakeholders. Represents office as an active member on agency teams assigned throughout the year.

Requirements

Associate degree in veterinary technology and minimum of one (1) year experience of animal care in a zoological setting.

Additional Requirements:

1) Position requires medium to heavy lifting, walking and standing on uneven terrain, crawling and moving at heights. Exposure to weather conditions, cleaning agents and other materials used to carry out job duties.
2) Must have computer skills, ability to communicate both orally and in writing, experience with animal husbandry, zoological veterinary care and animal restraint.
3) Possess or obtain valid SC drivers license. Veterinary Technician License in state of South Carolina.

Actual Job Location: Charlestowne Landing State Historic Site

Full-time, 40 hours per week rotating schedule including weekends and holidays.
