Job Description

Summary

This job involves trimming, pruning, and removing tall trees in a city setting, using tools like chainsaws and aerial equipment to keep public areas safe and healthy.

Workers also drive trucks to haul away branches and may supervise others during tasks.

It's a good fit for someone with hands-on experience in tree care who is comfortable with heights, heavy equipment, and occasional emergency or weekend work.

  • Desirable: Certified Arborist or Tree Worker Certification
  • Proof of any substituting education or training (e.g., arboriculture program for up to 6 months of experience)

SALARY INFORMATION:
Grade Level I: $22.833 - $31.187 Hourly
Grade Level II: $24.633 - $33.589 Hourly

Requirements

Under general supervision, trims tall trees and utilizes specialized equipment and techniques in the removal of excess, dead or diseased limbs or branches; utilizes power saws and hand tools; plants, prunes and removes trees; performs minor tree surgery work such as treating cut surfaces; observes safety rules and regulations; drives 2-axle or 3-axle vehicle; drives a 16-yard capacity trash truck for the disposal of limbs and/or branches; supervises work of subordinates; performs other related duties as required.

Qualifications

Two years of professional, paid full-time equivalent experience, in the trimming and shaping of tall trees requiring the use of chain saws, ropes, slings, aerial towers, and gear other than ladders.


OPPORTUNITES FOR SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION OR EXPERIENCE

Additional experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis to the extent that the experience has prepared the individual to perform the duties of the classification.

Successful completion of an approved training program in arboriculture or tree maintenance may be substituted for six months of the required experience (proof required).*


Proof of required documents, such as degrees and transcripts must be uploaded to the online application at the time of filing. Candidates who possess degrees from colleges or universities from outside the United States must attach proof of educational equivalency.

Valid Class B driver's license and a current DMV driving record must be submitted to the hiring department at the time of selection.

Willingness to serve on 24-hour call for emergency service and to work holidays and weekends when necessary. (The City's Tree Trimmers are required to work some holidays and weekends regularly).

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS: Certified Arborist or Tree Worker Certification.

A minimum rating of 70 must be attained in order to pass the examination. Certification by score bands will be considered based on an analysis of exam results.

This is a continuous eligible list, which means eligible lists may be established periodically and may expire six months from their effective date.

Applicants may apply only once during a four-month period.

Candidates meeting the minimum qualifications with applications received by January 16, 2026, will be invited with Test #01 candidates to the performance examination.

Screening of applicants will be conducted on the basis of application and required supplemental application submitted.

Only those candidates showing the strongest backgrounds on the basis of comparative analysis will be invited to the examination process.

Based on the number of applications accepted, the selection procedure may be changed. In the event a revision is necessary, the affected persons will be notified.

In accordance with Civil Service Procedure 3.38, all eligible veterans that successfully qualify on any or all open-competitive examinations shall receive an additional credit of ten (10) points that will be added to their original passing score.

Disabled veterans passing the examination shall receive a credit of fifteen (15) points that will be added to their original passing score.

(A copy of the veterans DD-214, Member 4 form indicating honorable discharge must be attached to the application at the time of filing.)
