The Opportunity

WSDOT is seeking two knowledgeable and detail-oriented individuals to support the region Traffic Office for efforts that improve the safety, reliability, and efficiency of the highway system: one for the Traffic Design group and one for the Traffic Safety Operations group.

The Design position will contribute to the delivery of traffic plans, specifications, and estimates for projects involving illumination, signals, and Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS).

The Traffic Safety Operations position will conduct operational reviews and analyze crash data to identify safety improvements and minor operational enhancements, while also designing signs and reviewing traffic control plans.

Working collaboratively with internal teams, local agencies, and the public, these positions will help address traffic-related concerns and support data-driven safety improvements aligned with WSDOT’s goals of strategic investment, modal integration, and smart technology.

Our top candidates will demonstrate skills in traffic engineering analysis, knowledge of traffic control and ITS systems, and the ability to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams and stakeholders.


What to Expect

Among the varied range of responsibilities held within these two roles, the Transportation Engineers will:

  • Assist the Traffic Design Engineer in the development and management of Plans, Specifications & Estimates, serve as needed in the preparation of signing, illumination, traffic signal, and/or ITS contracts or components of contracts.
  • Assist in the development and management of Task Orders for the delivery of work requested by other offices, local agencies, developers, and consultants, as well as for work by others performed for the Traffic Office.
  • Apply traffic-related Standard Specifications, Regional Special Provisions, Standard Plans and other manuals/procedures and makes recommendations for improvement.
  • Assist in the management of inventory related to the Region's Program as part of assisting Region Program Management in the scoping process for the Capital Improvements and Preservation Program.
  • Conduct systematic Field Assessments of Region highways, concentrating on safety, mobility, congestion relief, and traffic control device routine maintenance.
  • Develop Minor Operational Enhancement projects that provide immediate improvement to the operational safety and efficiency of the highway system.
  • Respond to investigations that may include site reviews, collision investigation, supporting documentation, and correspondence.
  • Assist as needed to administer the Highway Advertising Control Act and Motorist Information Signing programs.


Qualifications

To be considered for these opportunities, the following are required:

  • Technical Engineering Knowledge: Demonstrated foundational knowledge of engineering principles related to transportation and traffic engineering, gained through education, training, and/or experience, sufficient to support traffic design, analysis, field investigations, and preparation of plans, specifications, and estimates under general supervision.
  • Analytical Thinking: Ability to assess data, identify problems, and apply logical solutions.
  • Communication: Effective written and verbal communication skills to interact with contractors, engineering staff, and the public. Ability to communicate observations, findings, and technical data clearly in documentation and discussions.
  • Teamwork and Collaboration: Demonstrated ability to work effectively with others to achieve project goals.
  • Problem Solving and Decision-Making: Demonstrated ability to identify issues and contribute to solutions under guidance.
  • Attention to Detail: Demonstrated ability to ensure accuracy and quality of in-work products.
  • Time Management and Organization: Demonstrated ability to plan, prioritize, and complete tasks within deadlines.
  • Adaptability and Learning: Skills to adjust to changing tasks or methods and is willing to learn new skills.
  • Professionalism and Ethics: Ability to follow standards, safety protocols, and demonstrates integrity.
  • Use of Technology and Software: Working knowledge of industry software such as MicroStation, Inroads/Open Roads, and Microsoft Office. Experience with or ability to learn tools for estimating, drafting, documentation, design analysis, and scheduling.
  • Growth Mindset: Actively demonstrates a commitment to learning and growth.
  • Service-Oriented: Takes action to meet the needs of others.


In addition to the competencies above, the following are also required:

  • A valid driver’s license and the ability to operate state-owned vehicles.
  • Ability to perform visits to various structures with other engineers.


It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:

Traffic Engineering & Operations Expertise: Certification as an Engineer-in-Training (EIT) or Certification as a Land Surveyor-in-Training (LSIT) and/or formal education with a major in civil engineering, structural engineering, geotechnical engineering, soil mechanics, traffic, transportation, or a closely related field.

Experience applying Traffic Engineering and Operations theories, principles, and practices to various situations.

  • Field Investigation & Engineering Analysis: Ability to conduct field investigations; collect, analyze, and evaluate data; and assist in developing engineering recommendations.
  • Electrical and ITS Design: Ability to perform or support electrical and ITS design in accordance with applicable standards and requirements.
  • PS&E: Ability to develop, review, or contribute to plans, specifications, and estimates for transportation projects.
