Full Job Description

King County Metro Transit’s Facilities division has an exciting opportunity for a Transit Maintenance Constructor I (Millwright).

In this role, you will be responsible for performing skilled mechanical, millwright, welding, and plumbing work in the maintenance and repair of transit buildings, facilities, structures, and equipment.

This position will be responsible for maintaining and repairing the full range of varied equipment utilized in a transit base fleet maintenance and repair facility.

Work includes establishing and maintaining a preventive maintenance schedule; overhauling and repairing the full range of equipment utilized; minimizing equipment downtimes to optimize service availability; assisting with developing specifications and purchasing new equipment; and coordinating and reviewing the work performed by related outside contractors.

Assigned work may also include performing duties involving pipefitting, plumbing, structural repair, and/or welding, as needed.

The ideal candidate for this position will have the ability to learn and transfer new and expanded knowledge and skills as equipment and components evolve and are improved, modified, and updated.

Recruitment Information:

This recruitment is looking to fill two (2) Career Service positions.

In addition, this selection process may be used to generate an eligibility pool for future Career Service, as well as any fully benefited Term-Limited Temporary (TLT) and/or Special Duty Assignment (SDA) vacancies that may occur in this classification and in this division.

Eligibility pools remain valid for 12 months upon creation, or until the list is exhausted, at the discretion of the hiring authority.

Wage Information:

Qualified candidates typically start at the mid-point of the established pay range, depending on candidate qualifications. The top step of the pay range is achieved within three (3) years or less through automatic step progression, depending on initial step placement at time of hire.

The pay range for day shift is $35.94 to $51.34 per hour. The mid-point step is currently $46.21 per hour for day shift.

Position is eligible for shift differential if assigned to swing/afternoon or overnight shift. Positions assigned to swing/afternoon shift receive 5% shift differential, and positions assigned to overnight shift receive 7.5% shift differential.

Additionally, this position is the first in a series of two classifications, allowing candidates to advance to Transit Facilities Constructor II upon obtaining and maintaining necessary certifications and/or training required.

Advancement to the Transit Facilities Constructor II classification results in a 5% pay increase.

About Metro’s Transit Facilities Division:

King County Metro Transit’s Facilities Division maintains all Metro Transit properties, such as bus bases, park & rides, bus shelters, and offices and maintenance shops.

Services include bus shelter repairs and replacements, bus shelter cleaning, trolley wire repairs, radio maintenance for buses, environmental spill clean-up, bus sign replacement, graffiti removal, and other facilities maintenance duties.

Internally, team provides division-wide support functions for finance, budget, environmental compliance, safety, training, administrative services and new employee orientation.

Planning, inventory/materials management, work center, workforce management, functional asset management, general/maintenance agreements, systems support, capital infrastructure, sustainable resources/energy.

Requirements

  • Perform corrective maintenance, major equipment overhauls, and routine skilled mechanical maintenance as determined by management or a manufacturer's established preventive maintenance program schedule on such items as automatic bus washers, hydraulic and electro-hydraulic bus hoists, stationary air compressors (Pistons and Screw), automatic doors, steam cleaners, fuel receiving, storage and pumping systems, and various hydraulic/non-hydraulic shop equipment.
  • Operate a lathe, drill press, and other types of machine shop equipment: design and fabricate parts, to include welding ferrous and non-ferrous metals.
  • Install, remove, relocate, align, and anchor various types of equipment; disconnect and connect air, oil, water, and electrical systems at the primary wall or floor connection.
  • Some functions may include being the primary contact person for project work that is contracted out, and coordinate all base maintenance work provided by outside crafts such as electrical, plumbing, and heating.
  • Assist with development of specifications and purchase of equipment and materials as requested.
  • Track and maintain maintenance records on a personal computer and extract data for a computer database. Current computer programs used are EAM, Oracle, Microsoft Excel, Outlook and Word.
  • Maintain and service equipment, including pumps, pressure washers, gates, shop machinery, groundskeeping, heavy-duty and related equipment.
  • Repair, modify, and replace diversified building and structural systems, including plumbing, piping, irrigation, pneumatic, hydraulic, natural gas, water, steam, industrial wastewater, fire suppression, and fuel.
  • Operate heavy-duty equipment, including backhoes, loaders, dump trucks, forklifts, snowplows, road sanding, and similar equipment.


Qualifications

To be considered eligible for this role, applicants must possess these MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Three (3) or more years of journey-level work experience in the millwright, mechanical trades, plumbing, and/or welding; or, completion of a recognized apprenticeship, training, or vocational school program in the millwright, mechanical trades, plumbing, and/or welding; or, some combination thereof totaling three (3) or more years.
  • Knowledge of principles, practices, techniques, tools, and equipment of the plumbing, pipe, and steam fitting trades.
  • Knowledge of oxyacetylene and various types of electric arc welding.
  • Knowledge of the repair and installation of industrial water and wastewater systems.
  • Knowledge of the installation and repair of hydraulic and pneumatic systems.
  • Knowledge of the installation and repair of fire suppression, sprinkler, and irrigation systems.
  • Knowledge of and skill in the operation and repair of heavy-duty and related equipment.
  • Knowledge of the repair and maintenance of varied auxiliary equipment, including pumps, pressure washers.
  • Knowledge of standard construction practices, principles, and building systems.
  • Knowledge of related building and health codes and regulations.
  • Ability to troubleshoot problems with equipment/machinery.
  • Ability to work independently and make maintenance and repair priority decisions.
  • Ability to read and write and to understand oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to work effectively in a work environment that values diversity and employee participation.
  • Basic computer skills required to enter and extract information from automated systems and related software applications.

  • Two (2) or more years of Millwright, Maintenance Machinist, or related experience in a skilled craft that requires knowledge of specialized equipment used in the millwright's craft.

Necessary special requirements:
  • A valid Washington State driver's license is required and an acceptable driving record. If you possess an out of state driver's license, you must obtain a WA state license within 30 days of hire.

Work Schedule:

This position is typically scheduled full time (40 hours per week), with a typical schedule of Monday-Friday day shift.

However, because schedules are selected by a seniority-based twice-annual ‘shift pick’, employees must be available and willing to work any shift (day, swing, or overnight), weekends, nights, holidays, and call-outs.

This position is not exempt from the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act and is therefore overtime eligible, with prior supervisory approval.

This position is not eligible for telework/remote work.

Work Location:

The work location will be at South Maintenance Facility (11911 E Marginal Way S; Seattle, WA 98134).

Work Environment:

Work may be performed indoors or outdoors, sometimes in inclement weather. Work may need to be performed in confined spaces and at heights, such as on roofs.

Must be able to work in hot areas such as boiler rooms and inside fan plenums. When warranted, must be able and willing to wear safety equipment and protective clothing as required.

Physical Requirements:

This position is required to frequently lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds and may involve lifting and carrying objects weighing up to 100 pounds with assistance.

Frequent walking, reaching, climbing, kneeling, stooping, and safe operation of power tools are also required. Work is often performed in cramped and awkward positions.
