Attention Revenue! The Audit Division is now hiring a
Theory Reviewer - Revenue Auditor 3 in its Audit Standards & Procedures Unit. This unit is responsible for the review of all field audit reports for mathematical accuracy and proper application of tax law and accounting theory prior to issuing an assessment for additional tax or a credit for over payment.
The official duty station of this position is Tumwater, with candidates being considered statewide. Telework options are available; however, the incumbent will be required to work from Department of Revenue locations as business needs dictate. Details of teleworking considerations will be addressed during the interview process.

Requirements
As a Theory Reviewer, you will use your technical expertise to provide guidance to the Audit staff on tax issues, assist in the development of tax policy, consistency of tax applications and audit reports, and support the designing and implementation of strategic business policy within the Audit Division.
Some more of what you will do:Review all adjustments for compliance with tax laws and rules, administrative ruling, and recent court decisions.Determine that audit adjustments conform to appropriate auditing and accounting practices and procedures as well as departmental policy and procedural guidelines.
Ensure the audit report contains appropriate instructions for future reporting and that appropriate rules and laws are referenced throughout the document.
Ensure uniformity in the application of tax laws. Perform expenditure analysis of legislative bills.
Conduct detailed analysis of Determinations, WTD’s, and appeal petitions.Acts as team lead and coordinator on Audit Division Industry Guide Teams.
Process all public records and discovery requests for the Division.Prepare and facilitate training with the Audit Division employees.
Qualifications
The required qualifications are key competencies that have been successfully demonstrated through experience or education.
To join our team, you must possess the following knowledge, skills, abilities, and competencies:Advanced Knowledge of Accounting Principles and Tools: Demonstrated expertise in applying accounting principles, including advanced understanding of financial statements, general ledgers, and journal entries within diverse business environments.
Proficient in advanced Excel functions and formulas to organize, analyze, and summarize data.In-depth knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
Research, Analysis, and Problem Solving:
- Proven ability to understand and solve problems by applying advanced critical thinking to evaluate financial data, identify risk exposure, and develop strategic solutions.
- Ability to synthesize complex data into fundamental issues and manageable components, identifying the logical outcomes from the analyses of the data collected.
- Ability to research, interpret, and apply federal and state tax laws to determine correct tax reporting.
Planning and Organization:
- Extensive experience leading and managing multiple assignments or projects simultaneously, while ensuring alignment with organizational priorities and deadlines.
- Ability to regularly evaluate progress on assignments and adjust organization, priority, time, method, etc., to meet deadlines.
Communication (Written and verbal):
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to distill complex tax and financial concepts into actionable insights for diverse audiences to generate understanding and reach agreement.
- Ability to navigate challenging conversations and deliver unfavorable outcomes about tax implications to businesses and representatives in a professional manner.
- Skilled in drafting written communication that effectively conveys ideas or information to the intended reader.
Adaptability:
- Possess an openness toward changing ideas, responsibilities, strategies, and processes.
- Experience working with a high degree of autonomy and also participating collaboratively as part of a team.

Preference may be granted to a candidate with any combination of professional experience or education, such as:
- Two (2) years of experience as a Revenue Auditor 2, plus four (4) years of professional accounting, tax compliance or tax examination experience.
- Eight (8) or more years of professional experience in accounting, auditing, tax compliance, or tax administration.
- Bachelor's degree with a major in accounting or 24 semester or 36 quarter hours of college-level accounting or CPA Exam eligible, and two (2) years of experience as a Revenue Auditor 2 or four (4) years of professional accounting, tax compliance or tax examination experience.
