Job Description

Summary

This temporary job involves traveling across Colorado to install and maintain signs, gates, and parking areas on state trust lands to help people access hunting and fishing spots.

It's hands-on outdoor work in remote areas, using tools and vehicles to keep properties safe and easy to navigate.

A good fit would be someone physically fit, comfortable working alone, and passionate about natural resources and outdoor activities.

Key Requirements

Requirements

Colorado Parks and Wildlife is accepting resumes/applications for a temporary position with the State Trust Land (STL) Hunting and Fishing Access Program as a seasonal Field Technician I.


The State Trust Land Hunting and Fishing Access Program Field Technician position is responsible for installing and maintaining property signs and infrastructure (boundary signs, entrance signs, travel management signs, construction of parking areas, installation of gates) as needed on approximately 1 million acres of State Trust Lands leased by CPW, from the CO State Land Board, to provide public access for hunting and fishing opportunities on enrolled STL’s.

This position works directly for the full-time CPW STL Hunting and Fishing Access Program Coordinator, but will be required to travel and perform STL property sign maintenance on their own.

Position requires routine operation of 4x4 pickup truck, ATV, ATV trailer towing, hiking carrying weight of signs and tools, digging post holes and setting posts, using post pounder to pound boundary marker posts into the ground, lifting of 50+ lbs, use of power and hand tools, manual labor and the application of an advanced level of common sense and efficiency.

Job also requires frequent use of handheld GPS units, onXmaps and advanced level topography map reading for route finding; along with being familiar with CPW’s resource on property information (CO Recreation Lands Brochure).

This job requires that employee schedule is flexible and able to travel around the state of CO, often for multiple days/nights, to perform property sign maintenance in remote areas.

Safety is our #1 priority while working in remote locations or traveling, and adherence to expectations of State Employees is required. Work will be assigned to this position by Supervisor.

Position also consists of potential for frequent interaction with Wildlife Officers, other CPW personnel, other private lessees of these properties, and members of the Public while on STL properties or while traveling to/from work locations statewide.

This job is approximately 95% outdoors in the elements and requires a good degree of physical fitness.

Employee will be required to purchase own meals while in travel status and will be reimbursed Per Diem once each overnight trip is completed at the allowance allowed by the federal per diem rates based on location of trip.

Qualifications

  • Must live in or within a reasonable proximity to Salida, CO.

  • Must have valid, current Driver’s License and be age 18 years or older.

  • At least some significant experience in outdoor recreation (hunting, hiking, ATV operation) and/or general property maintenance or ranch hand experience.

  • Ability to interact with the general public in person and with other CPW employees statewide.

  • Possess some general knowledge and experience using handheld GPS units, onXmaps and reading topography maps.

  • Ability and willingness to travel statewide and most times do so independently.

  • Strong work ethic and attention to detail

  • Dependable, Responsible, Trustworthy and Punctual

  • Willingness to learn and ask questions when needed.

  • Able to take direction from supervisor and others at a higher level around the state.

  • Is a “team player”

  • No felony convictions or other serious criminal convictions.


The preferred candidate will have worked in a Parks or Wildlife setting, and/or have wildlife outdoors recreational/maintenance/labor work experience, and/or ranch hand/property maintenance experience; have experience working with handheld GPS units, map applications and/or reading topography maps; has advanced experience driving a full size pickup truck and towing bumper-pull trailers; lives within reasonable distance to Salida, CO; is able to travel statewide overnight for multiple days/nights as is routinely needed; can work directly with supervisor as needed and often work independently and be self-motivating; can openly communicate with supervisor and others; can avoid any kind of confrontation with members of the public, other lessees of STL’s, and other CPW employees; and has a positive attitude, a willingness to learn when needed, and has a passion for the outdoors. Position will also require time spent at the Salida CPW Warehouse organizing our stored signs, tools and equipment; cleaning up our storage areas and performing any similar maintenance tasks assigned by supervisor at this home base location.

Pursuant to the DNR-120 Fleet and Driving Standards Administrative Directive, any worker who will be expected to drive a State-owned vehicle is responsible for maintaining a safe driving record and a valid driver license prior to driving any State-owned vehicle.

To be compliant with the new fleet vehicle policy, Motor Vehicle Records (MVRs) will be pulled for review for workers who: Have an assigned State fleet vehicle
