Summary

This is a temporary seasonal job at Mancos and Lone Mesa State Parks in Colorado, involving hands-on maintenance of park facilities or customer service at the visitor center, lasting up to 9 months from spring through fall.

Workers help keep the parks clean and welcoming for visitors enjoying camping, fishing, hiking, and boating.

Requirements

Mancos State Park in southwestern Colorado is an ideal destination for outdoor enthusiasts and travelers year-round.

Many visitors choose Mancos as their camping base while exploring nearby attractions like Mesa Verde National Park, the San Juan Skyway, public lands and Durango.

The main attraction of the park is the 750 surface acres of Jackson Gulch Reservoir. Visitors are able to fish from shore or from wakeless boats, or enjoy a day on the water with their paddlecraft.

Visitors to Mancos also enjoy the 32campsites, 2 yurts, hiking trails, Group Picnic Area, and day use areas.

MAINTENANCE TECH: Responsible for general park maintenance, cleaning of public facilities (including restrooms, vault toilet facilities, yurts, campsites, picnic areas, offices, trails and common areas, etc).

Operation and routine maintenance of state-owned vehicles and equipment will be required.

The position assists in providing quality customer service, high standards of facility cleanliness and maintenance, and completion of special projects and tasks that may include but are not limited to: fence construction and maintenance, trail work and trail crew supervision, tree removal and firewood processing, weed removal, and dock and boating-related infrastructure management and maintenance.

May assist with or perform carpentry, plumbing, masonry, electrical work, transporting equipment and supplies, backhoe, skid steer, dump truck and landscaping equipment operation, and other tasks as assigned.

VISITOR CENTER TECHINCIAN: A customer service based position that involves working in a visitor center greeting visitors, and/or may be assigned to work as an entrance gate attendant. Daily interaction with park visitors requires effective communication and public relations skills. Specific duties include but are not limited to:
  • Staff the park entrance station.
  • Provide information and assistance to visitors (distributes maps/ brochures, orients visitors to park facilities and amenities, promotes education programs, educates on State Park regulations, etc.).
  • Sell parks passes, permits, books, maps, clothing, firewood and other novelties
  • Sell gift certificates, search and rescue cards, boat registrations, Off-Highway Vehicle (OHV) and snowmobile registrations and permits, and fishing and hunting licenses.
  • Operate a cash register.
  • Answer telephones and transfer/take messages.
  • Photo-copy and file documents.
  • Collect revenue, complete shift report, and balance shift box at end of each shift.
  • May prepare campground reservations forms and documents.
  • May document and report visitor complaints.
  • Clean and perform light maintenance duties, including litter pick up.
  • May assist with special events or programs within the park.
  • Other duties as assigned.
INTERPRETIVE NATURALIST: This position supports the park by delivering high-quality interpretive and educational programming for visitors. It helps connect the public to the park’s natural, cultural, and recreational resources through talks, guided walks, demonstrations, and hands-on activities. This position also staffs the Visitor Center at least two days a week and as needed at other times. Specific duties include but are not limited to:

Schedule, plan, coordinate, and present the seasonal program calendar
Develop and deliver a variety of interpretive programs, including guided hikes, nature walks, campfire talks, children's programs, wildlife presentations, Junior Ranger programs, school and group programs, outreach programs, and other recreation opportunities (fishing etc.)
Present information in clear, engaging ways aligned with the agency's interpretive standards
Help promote programs through flyers, social media content, bulletin boards, or park communication channels
Create informal interpretive opportunities in campgrounds and day use areas through roving interpretation, visitor contact, and spontaneous educational interactions
Collect, catalog, organize and protect park collections of slides, photographs, specimens, etc.
Track program attendance and visitor contacts
Attend assigned training sessions, which may require statewide travel
Work with individual and group volunteers
May train volunteer naturalists
Work with other State, Federal and local agency naturalists
Other duties as assigned
These positions are up to 40 hours per week and up to nine months in duration. School schedules MAY be accommodated.
Housing may be available for one employee in the Park’s tiny home. Additionally, one Full Hook- Up RV site may be available for seasonal staff with their own RV or camper.

Qualifications

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:


  • Must be 18 years of age or older prior to start date

  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license required for operating a state vehicle and acceptable safe driving record (will be verified as part of comprehensive background check process).

  • Pursuant to the DNR-120 Fleet and Driving Standards Administrative Directive, any worker who will be expected to drive a State-owned vehicle is responsible for maintaining a safe driving record and a valid driver’s license prior to driving any State-owned vehicle.

    To be compliant with the new fleet vehicle policy, Motor Vehicle Records (MVRs) will be pulled for review for workers who: Have an assigned State fleet vehicle

  • Are required to operate a vehicle as part of the position

  • Utilize a State fleet vehicle as a pool vehicle

  • A background screening is required for placement in these positions

  • Applicants may be disqualified based on some felony or serious misdemeanor convictions

  • Strong customer service and interpersonal communication skills required

  • Must be enthusiastic, organized, and self-motivated

    REQUIREMENTS VISITOR CENTER TECH:
    • Must be 16 years of age or older.
    • Must have a valid drivers' license or reliable transportation.
    • Must be able to work weekends, holidays, and varied shifts.
    • This position is up to 40 hours per week.
    • School schedules may be accommodated.
    • Previous experience handling money and working with the public is helpful.
    • Experience with data entry and word processing utilizing MS Office Suite (Excel, Word, etc).
    • Possess strong interpersonal communication skills.
    • Ability to work with little supervision.
    • May be required to work the entrance station for an 8 hour shift and take lunch in the station.
    • Some uniform items will be provided, however employees will be required to purchase limited uniform items at their own expense.
    • Successful completion and passing of background screening may be required for placement in this position.

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
    This position will perform physical activities that require considerable use of your arms and legs and moving your whole body, such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, and handling materials.
