Location: Ames


Shift Requirements: 7:00 am to 3:30 pm, 5 days a week, some travel required


As a Telecommunications Design Specialist, you will oversee and coordinate the Iowa DOT Radio and Wireless Communications Technologies Section and function as the Lead Worker.

You will provide weekly contact with staff to review and plan work and be actively involved with Maintenance Leadership meetings.

You will also assist the Bureau Director and Electronic Engineering Technician to plan the budget and project workflow.


Our best candidate will be a customer-focused, skilled communicator, both in writing and verbally, and able to adapt your communication style and methods to suit the audience's needs.

We are looking for candidates who are highly adaptable, capable of working effectively under rapidly changing conditions, and possess strong problem-solving and analytical skills.


Additional duties will include, but are not limited to:

  • Researching and developing new radio and other wireless communications Technologies
  • Continually evaluating all radio communications equipment, tower equipment, buildings, and auxiliary equipment for proper operations
  • This position acts as the American Association of State and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) Frequency Coordinator for the state, responsible for the interpretation and compliance with Federal Communications Commission (FCC) rules and regulations

Qualifications

Applicants must meet at least one of the following minimum requirements to qualify for positions in this job classification:
1) Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in any field and experience equal to four years of full-time work in one or any combination of:
a. The construction, plant, commercial, or marketing section of a telephone company; or
b. Professional electrical engineering design and/or maintenance of communications systems and equipment; or
c. Government or private industry where the primary responsibility involved the planning, designing, implementation, coordination, and maintenance of telecommunications systems.
2) All of the following (a and b):
a. Four years of full-time work experience (as described in number one); and
b. A total of four years of education and/or full-time experience (as described in number one), where thirty semester hours of accredited college or university course work in any field equals one year of full-time experience.
