Summary

This job is for an experienced IT professional who manages and maintains computer servers and related systems for a city water utility, including planning projects, ensuring everything runs smoothly, and fixing issues when they arise.

It involves leading technical work to keep servers secure, reliable, and up to date while collaborating with other teams.

A good fit would be someone with strong hands-on experience in server technology, a relevant degree, and the ability to handle complex troubleshooting in a team environment.

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Management Information Systems, Computer Engineering, or related field, plus 4 years of computer systems servers experience; or Associate's degree plus 6 years of experience
  • Valid Texas Class 'C' Driver's License or equivalent
  • Microsoft Certified IT Professional (MCITP) certification required within 6 months of appointment
  • Pass Criminal Justice Information Systems (CJIS) fingerprint-based background check within 6 months and maintain eligibility (no disqualifying convictions)
  • Experience in provisioning, installing, configuring, operating, and maintaining systems hardware, software, and infrastructure
  • Ability to lead server projects, conduct capacity planning, perform system monitoring, and provide Tier III support
  • Skills in backup operations, troubleshooting hardware/software failures, security monitoring, and managing enterprise directory services

Education and Experience: Bachelor's Degree or higher in Computer Science, Management Information Systems, Computer Engineering or related field and four (4) years of computer systems servers experience or an Associate's Degree in Computer Science, Management Information Systems, Computer Engineering, or related field and six (6) years of experience with computer systems servers.


Licenses and Certificates: Valid Texas Class "C" Driver's License or equivalent issued by another state by time of appointment. Microsoft Certified IT Professional (MCITP) certification is required within six (6) months of appointment.


Special Requirements: Applicants for positions assigned to the Department of Information Technology Services must pass a Criminal Justice Information Systems (CJIS) fingerprint-based background check within the first six months from hire and maintain CJIS eligibility.

CJIS requirements are related to system access and the following list of convictions and/or deferred adjudications will result in failure of the CJIS background check and disqualification and termination from employment: Felony Convictions, Felony Deferred Adjudication, Class A & B Misdemeanor Deferred Adjudication, Class B Misdemeanor Convictions, an open arrest warrant for any criminal offense (Felony or Misdemeanor), and family violence convictions.

Requirements

Under direction lead, plan, develop, and provide technical and project management support of server software and hardware projects and ensure procedures adhere to organizational goals and objectives.

Qualifications

Responsible for the effective provisioning, installation/configuration, operation, and maintenance of systems hardware, software, and related infrastructure.

Involves: Act as lead engineer in the design and review of new server systems, applications, and hardware. Conduct capacity planning of existing and new server systems.

Deploy large-scale servers and systems; configure hardware, peripherals, services, settings, directories, and storage in accordance with standards and project and operational requirements.

Maintain installation and configuration procedures. Contribute to and maintain system standards.

Coordinate and collaborate with network administrators, business application, and database administration functions to ensure the availability, reliability, and scalability of the servers to meet daily operations.

Assist in the design and development of data center/server room security features, including HVAC control, environmental alarms, and access restrictions.

Assist in the review of new server systems, applications, and hardware and conduct capacity planning.

Perform daily system monitoring; verify the integrity and availability of all hardware, server resources, systems, and key processes.

Perform regular security monitoring to identify any possible intrusions. Review system and application logs and verify completion of scheduled jobs such as backups.

Maintain data center environmental and monitoring equipment.


Perform server infrastructure functions. Involves: Assist with daily backup operations.

Ensure all required file systems and systems data are successfully backed up to the appropriate media; recovery tapes or disks are created and media is recycled and sent offsite as necessary.

Perform regular file archival function and purge as necessary. Monitor and test system performance and provide performance statistics and reports. Create shell scripts as required.

Create, change, and delete user accounts by request. Provide Tier III support to various city departments. Investigate and troubleshoot server issues.

Repair and recover from hardware and/or software failures. Coordinate and communicate with impacted customers. Manage enterprise directory services. Configure and/or add new services as necessary.

Configure CPU, memory, and disk partitions as required.


Maintain server functionality. Involves: Maintain server documentation and training materials. Implement server upgrades, maintenance fixes, and vendor-supplied patches.

Perform ongoing performance tuning and resource optimization. Resolve escalated server issues; provide timely response to customer issues.

Apply OS patches and upgrades regularly and upgrade administrative tools and utilities.

Recommend and execute modifications to the server environment to improve efficiency, reliability, and performance. Perform related system administration duties as required.
