Full Job Description

This position works in a hybrid telework schedule with an expectation of being in the office when needed. Travel to various work sites, businesses, and/or meeting locations is required.
  • This hybrid position requires a minimum of one day per week in the office during core business hours. Additional in-person meetings may be required based on project needs.
  • This temporary (extra hire) position is not eligible for County benefits.

In this Planner 2 temporary role, you will collaborate closely with the team to develop new process improvements and provide dedicated support for the Engineering Services Section.

The team is comprised of a Capital Projects Unit, Fish Passage Unit, and an Asset Unit that advance key strategic initiatives within the division of Surface Water Management.

Your work will focus on leading planning functions that support the research and development of a Level of Service framework for Surface Water Management’s (SWM) natural assets, continuing the evolution of the Project Delivery Manual, supporting the successful implementation of the Stage Gate delivery process, development of a project manager utilization tool, and moving forward with program development initiatives that enhance capital delivery and deepen integration with asset management practices.

How to be Successful in the Role:

Success in this role requires initiative, the ability to research best practices, and then implement these in new process improvements.

You will help develop work plans, support team meetings, track metrics, and assist in the delivery of the Surface Water Improvement Plan.

Effective collaboration and communication are key to ensuring projects are delivered on time and aligned with community and environmental goals.

Your Future in this Role:

This role provides a direct impact on Pierce County communities by supporting environmentally focused infrastructure delivery. You will gain hands-on experience with capital projects, interagency coordination, and planning process development.

Core Daily Responsibilities:

  • Develop a natural asset management framework
  • Assist in the continued development of the Stage Gate delivery process manual
  • Assist in the administration and facilitation of a stage gate capital delivery process.
  • Develop, measure, collect, and present individual and team Key Performance Indicators (KPI’s) for the Engineering Services Section, including project manager utilization metrics.
  • Develop and manage a comprehensive team schedule and individual work plans.
  • Maintain and update the fish passage inventory, including prioritization of culverts for replacement in support of salmon recovery efforts.

Qualifications

  • Additional education or experience may substitute for the recruiting requirements
  • Two years of related planning work
  • Bachelor’s degree in planning or related field

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in local, county, or state environmental planning is desired
  • Experience with surface water organizations
