Job Description

Summary

This job involves leading a team of statisticians at U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services to analyze data and provide advice on programs that protect against illegal immigration and fraud.

You'll use statistical methods and programming tools to draw insights from large datasets and recommend improvements to agency operations.

Key Requirements

As a SUPERVISORY STATISTICIAN, you will advise management and provide statistical advice on programs impacting organizational activity regarding key agency programs of major interest or having significant impact on the agency's mission.

The qualifications for this position must be met by 11:59 PM (Eastern Time) on 02/17/2026.

Current Federal employees must have served 52 weeks at the lower grade or equivalent grade band in the Federal service.

The Time-in-Grade requirement must be met by 11:59 PM (Eastern Time) on 02/17/2026.

Basic Requirements: All applicants must meet the following basic requirements: (Must be supported in Transcripts from an accredited institution, Resume and/or Applicable Certificate) Degree: that included 15 semester hours in statistics (or in mathematics and statistics, provided at least 6 semester hours were in statistics), and 9 additional semester hours in one or more of the following: physical or biological sciences, medicine, education, or engineering; or in the social sciences including demography, history, economics, social welfare, geography, international relations, social or cultural anthropology, health sociology, political science, public administration, psychology, etc.

Credit toward meeting statistical course requirements should be given for courses in which 50 percent of the course content appears to be statistical methods, e.g., courses that included studies in research methods in psychology or economics such as tests and measurements or business cycles, or courses in methods of processing mass statistical data such as tabulating methods or electronic data processing.

or Combination of education and experience -- courses as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

The experience should have included a full range of professional statistical work such as (a)sampling, (b) collecting, computing, and analyzing statistical data, and (c) applying statistical techniques such as measurement of central tendency, dispersion, skewness, sampling error, simple and multiple correlation, analysis of variance, and tests of significance.

Selective Placement Factor: You must have experience working with programming languages such as: SQL, R, Python, SAS, SPSS or Stata to conduct statistical analyses, query or integrate data sets.

GS-15: You qualify at the GS-15 level if you possess one (1) year of specialized experience, which is equivalent to at least the GS-14 level in the federal government, that equipped you with the skills needed to successfully perform the duties of the position.

  • Organizational Location: This position is located in the Department of Homeland Security, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, within Fraud Detection and National Security Directorate and is assigned based on the need of the agency.
  • Oversee the revision of long-range plans, goals, and objectives.
  • Apply statistical theories, procedures, and techniques to design analyses and studies of the agency's programs, operations, and databases, produce valid and reliable threat and vulnerability assessments.
  • Plan, research and apply data from secondary sources and prepare integrated analysis.
  • Responsible for developing and maintaining state-of-the-art statistical models.
  • Serve as a technical expert and consultant in analytical projects by: representing FDNS and/or the agency at meetings and conferences; coordinating with subject matter experts to resolve novel research problems; and provide training to staff.
  • Coordinate with information technology and contractor resources and staff on a frequent basis to assist with implementing new policies, procedures and tasks associated with enhanced data validation and processing.
