Full Job Description

This is a supervisory position within the Psychiatry Section and functions as the primary supervisor for assigned medical staff prescribers (psychiatrists, advanced practice registered nurses, and physician assistants).

Supervises the prescribers working on Behavioral Health Interdisciplinary Program (BHIP) teams, Primary Care Mental Health Integration (PCMHI) teams, and outpatient interventional psychiatry teams as applicable.

To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement.

Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.

Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.

Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine.

The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.

Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.

Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.

(NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), b) OR [(2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA),OR (3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States), which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences.

Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs).

PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e., not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis.

PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; rather, they are to have a "scope of practice" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision.

Additionally, surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs. Proficiency in spoken and written English.

Additional Requirement: Must be Board Certified Preferred Experience: Training and certification in providing interventional modalities to include ECT, rTMS, and esketamine.

Physical Requirements: This position requires potentially long periods of continued walking, standing, and sitting.

The position requires the ability to cover clinical nursing services and meet physical demands found in the patient care environment.

The incumbent may be exposed to infected patients and contaminated materials and may be required to don protective clothing.

The incumbent may occasionally be exposed to patients who are combative secondary to delirium, dementia, or psychiatric disorders.

The incumbent must be a mature, flexible, sensible individual capable of working effectively in stressful situations. able to shift priorities based on patient needs.

Must complete annual Employee Health requirements, such as annual TB screening or testing, as a condition of employment Initiates Basic Life Support (BLS) in accordance with current BLS standards to include automatic defibrillation in life-threatening situations.

Start, continue, or finish your career here | VA Eastern Colorado Health Care System(youtube.com) Clinical Duties (50%) Recommends interventional treatments such as rTMS, esketamine Delivers and supervises treatments of rTMS, esketamine as a credentialed provider Functions independently as a member of the VA ECHCS Medical Staff, with full clinical privileges for providing clinical care that requires psychiatric oversight by a physician Develops, implements, and documents treatment of an outpatient panel of patients Provides medical support and at times cross coverage for assigned outpatient medical staff Complies with national and local performance measures, including timely health care screening and completion of clinical reminders for all patients Assumes complete professional responsibility for clinical assessment findings, patient care decisions, and documentation Complies with all CPRS documentation procedures, including timeliness standards for documentation and properly entering diagnostic and procedure codes Adheres to operational policies and procedures for the treatment teams in both BHIP and PCMHI Gap coverage and provision of triage care as required Coordination with any clinical pharmacists in their area as needed Supports site directors for academic affiliates in their coordination of trainees Clinically supervises assigned trainees/residents and provides clinical coverage for trainees/residents as needed On-call element based on assigned primary location Administrative Duties (50%) General supervisory duties of assigned staff, to include ePerformance reviews, maintaining eCompetency folders, monitoring required trainings as TMS supervisor, addressing FMLA/RA requests as indicated.

Coordinates coverage and leave planning among direct reports and between sections as applicable with appropriate input from team leads. Addressing leave requests and timecards in VATAS/GovTA.

Tracking educational leave for each staff member reporting to them in real time.

Routine clinic cancellation LEAFs first approval (supervisory psychiatrist) and second approval (psychiatry section chief) with Team Lead listed as Additional Staff that need notification of clinic cancellation Callouts/Unplanned Sick Leave LEAFs completed by Team Lead In consultation with Team Leads, monitors individual labor mapping, grid management, scheduled clinic utilization, bookability, productivity/RVU targets, and other critical metrics for direct reports, with periodic updates reflecting adjustments to maximize patient access Addresses change of provider requests and open encounter follow up of assigned staff Participates in leadership meetings, serves on committees and/or workgroups as assigned Responds to customer service concern , patient safety reports, and associated required reporting as assigned Engages in quality improvement across the service as assigned, aligning efforts to strategic goals and clinical quarterly metrics (SAIL, etc) Encourages and fosters team and recovery-oriented care for Veterans using individual and group rounding Responsively tracks and manages ongoing professional practice evaluations biannually for assigned staff Administers all service level actions in recruitment and onboarding process for medical staff vacancies in their service area.

Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP): Authorized - This position is eligible for EDRP, a student loan payment reimbursement program.

You must meet specific individual eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of your start date.

Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after complete review of the EDRP application.
