Primary law enforcement experience: This is a covered secondary law enforcement position under the special retirement provisions of 5 U.S. C. 8336(c) (CSRS) and 8412(d) (FERS).
Applicants for this position must possess experience gained by substantial service in a primary law enforcement position.
NREMT- Basic certification: Must currently possess and be able to maintain a National Registry Emergency Medical Technician- Basic certification or higher by the close of the announcement on 03/27/2026.
- AND - To qualify at the GS-11 grade level, applicants must possess the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement: EXPERIENCE: At least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GL/GS-09 level or higher in the Federal service.
Examples of qualifying specialized experience include law enforcement, investigative work, emergency medical services or other similar duties involving the protection, conservation, or management of park areas; management or program specialist work involving the development and implementation of policy related to protection, conservation, or management of park areas or similar operations; or other similar work.
Equivalency to the GL/GS-09 level may be demonstrated by performing tasks such as analyzing law enforcement program activities to make improvements of operations; ensuring compliance of a law enforcement program with policy; making recommendations to higher level management regarding law enforcement program; and/or leading or supervising a law enforcement program; or similar work with a similar level of responsibility and analytical skills.

-OR- EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least three full years of graduate level study leading to a Doctorate, Ph.D., or equivalent degree at an accredited college or university in directly-related fields such as natural resource management, natural sciences, earth sciences, history, archaeology, anthropology, park and recreation management; law enforcement/police science, social sciences, museum sciences, business administration, public administration, behavioral sciences, or sociology.
You must include transcripts. -OR- Successful completion of a COMBINATION of education and experience as described above.
To combine education and experience, first take the number of semester hours or equivalent earned towards a graduate degree, in excess of 36 semester hours, and divide by 18 semester hours or equivalent.
Then, take the number of months of experience and divide by 12 months. Add the percentages together. The total must equal at least 100 percent to qualify.

This position is a Supervisory Park Ranger with primary duties and responsibilities in both the performance and supervision of work in the Visitor and Resource Protection program within Petrified Forest National Park.
The primary purpose of this position is to perform and to supervise employees in the investigation, apprehension, and transport of persons suspected and/or convicted of violation of criminal laws of the United States of America.
You will perform all aspects of supervision for GL-0025-09 permanent law enforcement rangers and may also supervise temporary law enforcement employees and/or non-commissioned staff.
In an area of proprietary jurisdiction, you are responsible for leading and planning daily operations and directing the completion of collateral duties.
You will set work goals and ensure all employees receive required training in a timely manner, identify operational requirements and make recommendations to your supervisor, and schedule patrols to maximize visitor contact with special consideration to problem areas.
You will supervise and lead law enforcement, all hazard, emergency medical, and search and rescue operations as well as provide emergency medical services to park visitors and residents.
Location: Holbrook, the nearest community, is 25 miles from the park. The park provides carpools for 7:00 and 8:00 work start times.
Holbrook averages 272 sunny days per year, with reasonable temperatures; average high in the warmest month of July is 95 and coldest average is 21 in December and January.
Holbrook has a movie theatre, dog parks, softball leagues, public shooting range, nine-hole golf course, a disc golf course, racquetball courts, a splash pad, a seasonal swimming pool, tennis courts, batting cage, mini golf course, farmers market, county fair, rodeos, historic museum, library, a variety of restaurants, and fitness centers.
Home prices are very reasonable. Kindergarten through high school is available, as well as a community college. Within an hour and a half of Holbrook are Flagstaff, AZ; Gallup, NM; and Show Low, AZ.
