Job Description

Summary

This job involves leading a team of library staff in organizing and cataloging naval history materials, ensuring everything is properly recorded and accessible in digital systems.

It also includes managing library databases, guiding preservation efforts, and setting team goals to support the Navy's historical collections.

Full Job Description

You will serve as a SUPERVISORY LIBRARIAN within NAVAL HISTORY AND HERITAGE COMMAND.

Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-11 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector.

Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: 1) Supervising cataloging and technical services staff by assigning work, reviewing cataloging activities, and ensuring compliance with established cataloging standards and library policies.

2) Performing and overseeing original and descriptive cataloging of complex library materials using nationally recognized cataloging rules, classification systems and subject headings.

3) Managing and maintaining an Integrated Library System (ILS) or similar automated library databases to ensure accuracy or bibliographic records and accessibility of library resources.

4) Analyzing print, electronic and archival materials, including special collections or government documents to ensure proper bibliographic control.

5) Developing and implementing cataloging procedures and providing technical guidance to staff on cataloging standards, library systems and information organization.

  • You will assign work to subordinates based on priorities, difficulty of assignments and the capabilities of employees.
  • You will resolve, direct and provide guidance on all cataloging problems, procedures or policies.
  • You will assist in preservation projects that include identification, prioritization and in-house conservation tasks.
  • You will determine, coordinate, and implement section goals under general guidance contained in the mission statements of the Naval History and Heritage Command and the Navy Department Library.
  • You will assign materials to be cataloged and manages authority control processes; supervises and monitors Section work-flow and productivity.
