Full Job Description

The Industrial hygienists at CAVHS perform a variety of functions related to the identification, evaluation, and control of occupational health hazards and to the promotion of healthful and safe working conditions.

The position is located at the Veterans Health Administration (VHA), Central Arkansas Veterans Healthcare System (CAVHS).

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 02/02/2026.

Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement.

For a GS-12 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-11. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service.

An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials.

If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement.

In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade.

Note: Time-In-Grade requirements also apply to former Federal employees applying for reinstatement as well as current employees applying for Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998 (VEOA) appointment.

Individual Occupational Requirements: All applicants must possess one of the following in order to meet minimum qualifications for this position.

A bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree in industrial hygiene, occupational health or sciences, occupational and environmental health, toxicology, safety sciences or related sciences (copy transcripts required); OR A bachelor's degree in a branch of engineering, physical science or life science that included 12 semester hours in chemistry, including organic chemistry and 18 additional semester hours of courses in any combination of chemistry, physics, engineering, health physics, environmental health, biostatistics, biology, physiology, toxicology, epidemiology or industrial hygiene (copy transcripts required); OR Certification from the American Board of Industrial Hygiene (ABIH) (copy of certification required) In addition to the basic requirements, you may qualify based on your experience as described below: Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-11 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization.

Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: overseeing programs such as Hazard Communication, Respiratory Protection, Asbestos and Lead sampling and/or other industrial hygiene programs; making decisions and/or recommendation based on inspections and evaluation of existing industrial programs; AND identifying the best approach, solution and/or methodology in resolving conflicts.

You will be rated on the following Competencies for this position: Interpret Instructions, Specifications (other than blueprint reading) Plan and organize work Without more than normal supervision Work as Member of Team Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social).

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week.

Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities.

Physical Requirements: There may be some walking or bending during infrequent walk-through inspections of worksites.

Major Duties:

Major duties include, but limited to: Oversee and implementing assessment and regulatory requirements for Asbestos/Lead/Mold abatement and mitigation, Indoor Air Quality, and overall primary Industrial Hygiene (IH) Program Management, to include development of Comprehensive Employee Exposure Assessments across Central Arkansas Veterans Healthcare System (CAVHS).

Executes and/or oversees: Hazard Communication; Public Water and other Specialty Water compliance; Ventilation System certifications (for those controlling hazards); the Hearing Conservation Program; Sterile and Hazardous Drug contaminant control; Emergency Showers and Eye Washes; Respiratory Protection; Ergonomics; Confined Spaces; and coordinates a cross-functional working group to determine occupational exams derived from workplace exposures.

Perform a variety of functions related to the identification, evaluation, and control of occupational health hazards and to the promotion of healthful and safe working conditions.

Surveys; coordination with other health and safety specialists; administration of industrial hygiene programs; review of design plans for hazard control, investigation of causative agents for occupational illness; and the provision of education and training programs.

Assumes a lead role in the development of industrial hygiene goals, policy, and procedural documentation for a facility.

Supports the development of facility industrial hygiene policies, programs, and procedural documentation.

Applies appropriate sampling techniques and procedures and may oversee the work of contractors engaged to perform specific monitoring.
