About the Position: Serve as a Supervisory Firefighter (Hazardous Materials Technician) for the Directorate of Emergency Services at White Sands Missile Range, New Mexico.

This position is included under the provisions of Special Retirement Coverage (SRC) and may have both a maximum entry age and a mandatory retirement date.

For Internal Candidates: I have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-09 grade level in the Federal service which includes 1) Engaging in hazardous containment for assigned organization; 2) Responding to incidents when firefighting support is needed such as: fire suppression operations, hazardous materials emergencies, aircraft emergencies, aircraft rescue and/or medical operations; 3) Assisting staff with policies related to firefighting.

Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-09).

For External Candidates: I have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-10 grade level in the Federal service which includes 1) Engaging in hazardous containment for assigned organization; 2) Responding to incidents when firefighting support is needed such as: fire suppression operations, hazardous materials emergencies, aircraft emergencies, aircraft rescue and/or medical operations; 3) Assisting staff with policies related to firefighting.

Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-10).

In addition to meeting the specialized experience requirement above, applicants must also possess: Fire Officer III, Fire Inspector II, Fire Instructor II, HAZMAT Incident Commander and Airport Firefighter certified through DoD Fire and Emergency Services Certification System, International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC), or the Fire Service Professional Qualifications System (PRO-Board) in accordance with DoD 6055.06-M.

(NOTE: You must include copies of the certifications with your application package.) Major Duties:

  • On assigned shift directs the operations of a fire protection force for the installation.
  • On assigned shift, directs through three subordinate stations chiefs, a fire protection.
  • Delegates authority to subordinate supervisors and holds them responsible for the performance of their organizational elements.
  • Directs the hazardous materials protection and control program.
  • As a fully qualified Hazardous Materials Technician, responds as a member of the department's hazardous materials team.
