Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social).
You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Specialized Experience: (For Current Federal Employees) One year of specialized experience which includes 1) controlling or extinguishing fires as a member of an organized military, industrial, volunteer, or governmental fire department brigade; 2) suppressing fires; 3) responding to Hazardous Material (HAZMAT), structural, and fire emergencies; 4) inspecting fire protection systems, fire detection systems, and fire safety equipment to ensure proper operation; 5) performing rescue operations; and 6) teaching to instruct firefighting personnel on methods and procedures.
This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-09).
(For Non-Federal Employees) One year of specialized experience which includes 1) controlling or extinguishing fires as a member of an organized military, industrial, volunteer, or governmental fire department brigade; 2) suppressing fires; 3) responding to Hazardous Material (HAZMAT), structural, and fire emergencies; 4) inspecting fire protection systems, fire detection systems, and fire safety equipment to ensure proper operation; 5) performing rescue operations; and 6) teaching to instruct firefighting personnel on methods and procedures.
This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-10).
Additional Requirements: In addition to meeting the specialized experience requirement above, applicants must also possess Fire Officer III; Fire Instructor II; Fire Inspector II; HAZMAT Technician; HAZMAT Incident Commander; AND Marine Shipboard Firefighting for Land Based Firefighters certified through DoD Fire and Emergency Services Certification System, International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC), or the Fire Service Professional Qualifications System (PRO-Board) in accordance with DoD 6055.06-M.
