Job Description

Summary

This job is for a lead firefighter at a U.S. Army base in Michigan, where you'll supervise a team in putting out fires, handling rescues, and dealing with hazardous materials during emergencies.

You'll also train your crew on safety and firefighting skills, and manage their daily tasks.

It's a good fit for experienced firefighters with leadership skills who enjoy high-stakes team environments and have the required certifications.

Key Requirements

  • One year of specialized experience at GS-08 level (for current federal employees) or GS-09 level (for external applicants) in leading firefighting crews, emergency responses, and training
  • Possess and maintain DoD, Pro-Board, or IFSAC certifications: Fire Officer III, Fire Instructor II, Fire Inspector II, HAZMAT Technician, and HAZMAT Incident Commander
  • Possess and maintain Emergency Medical Technician-Basic (EMT-B) certification from the State of Michigan or National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT-B)
  • Ability to direct firefighting crews in controlling fires, rescue operations, and hazardous material incidents
  • Experience providing training in firefighting techniques, prevention procedures, safety, and emergency medical procedures
  • Skills in assigning daily operational duties and managing schedules for firefighting crew members
  • Meet one of the specified employment authority categories for eligibility, such as current Army civilians or veterans

About the Position: This position is located with the Directorate of Emergency Services, Fire Department, on Detroit Arsenal in Warren/Macomb, MI.

Specialized Experience Current Federal Employees: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-08 grade level in the Federal service which includes 1) Directs the work of a firefighting crew in controlling and extinguishing fires, responding to emergency/rescue operations and variety of hazardous material incidents; 2) Provides training in firefighting techniques and prevention procedures, safety and emergency medical procedures; and 3) Assigns daily operational duties to firefighting crewmembers.

This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-08).

External Applicants: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-09 grade level in the Federal service which includes 1) Leading crew in firefighting activities, such as HAZMAT incidents, fire, rescue and medical emergency operations; and 2) Instructs crewmembers by conducting demonstration and lectures concerning firefighting techniques and fire protection and prevention methods; and 3) Manage daily operational plans and schedules of the firefighting crew.

This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-09).

Selective Placement Factors: This position requires you to possess and maintain at the time of application the following: DoD, Pro-Board, or IFSAC Firefighter Certification levels: Fire Officer III, Fire Instructor II, Fire Inspector II, HAZMAT Technician and HAZMAT Incident Commander.

This position requires you to possess and maintain Emergency Medical Technician-Basic Certification issued by the State of Michigan or National Registry Emergency Medical Technician-Basic (NREMT-B).

Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-08).

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify.

For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone -- no substitution of education for experience is permitted. Major Duties:

  • Serve as the Assistant Fire Chief for the Fire Department in support of Fire Protection and Prevention programs.
  • Serve as a technical advisor to management on all matters relating to Fire protection and prevention programs.
  • Ensure station is properly staffed with personnel who are trained and certified.
  • Supervisory authority for a fire company that consists of approximately 12 crew, plus responsibility of EMS ambulance crew.
  • Performs regular inspections of fire stations to ensure they are clean, orderly, and operated according to established policies.
  • Identifies training and developmental needs of subordinates and ensures required level of licensing and certifications are met.
  • Establishes work plans, sets priorities and manages schedules for efficient work completion.
  • Assist in preparing departmental budget and advise Supervisor in determining needs for fire, medical and HAZMAT equipment.
  • Establish performance standards and review requirements with crew members.
  • Conducts periodic meetings with supervised staff to review management goals, policies, and procedural changes in support of the organization and mission.
  • Directs the firefighting activities to include implementing procedures, techniques and methods of operation for rapid and effective response to fire calls.
  • Perform firefighting and emergency medical duties as mandated by the needs of the organization.
