Job Description

Summary

This job is for a lead firefighter at a U.S.

Army base in Kentucky, where you'll oversee a team, manage emergency responses like fires and hazardous material incidents, and ensure everyone is trained and ready.

It's ideal for someone with hands-on firefighting experience who enjoys leading others and staying prepared for high-stakes situations.

The role involves both day-to-day maintenance of equipment and stepping in to direct operations during crises.

Key Requirements

  • One year of specialized experience at GS-08 level or equivalent, including instructing firefighting methods, directing crews in fire suppression, HAZMAT, and medical emergencies, and inspecting fire systems
  • Possess and maintain DoD Firefighter Certifications: Fire Officer III, Fire Instructor II, Fire Inspector II, Hazardous Materials Operations, Hazardous Materials Incident Command, Airport Firefighter, and First Responder (Emergency Medical Technician)
  • Ability to attach copies of all required certifications to the application
  • U.S. Citizenship
  • Experience in operational readiness and maintenance of firefighting equipment
  • Skills in directing emergency operations and coordinating training drills

Full Job Description

This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Certain Personnel of the DoD Workforce to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service.

About the Position: This position is located with the Directorate of Emergency Services, Fort Campbell, KY.

This position is included under the provisions of Special Retirement Coverage (SRC) and may have both a maximum entry age and a mandatory retirement date.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social).

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

To qualify based on your experience, your resume must describe at least one year of experience which prepared you to do the work in this job.

Specialized Experience is defined as: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-08 grade level in the Federal service which includes: 1) Experience instructing firefighting personnel on methods and procedures utilizing knowledge of principles in teaching; 2) Experience directing subordinates to suppress fires on Structural and fire emergencies, respond to Hazardous Material (HAZMAT) incidents, and direct crews on emergency medical incidents; and 3) Experience inspecting fire protection systems, fire detection systems and fire safety equipment to ensure proper operation.

Selective Placement Factor: In addition to the specialized experience required to qualify for the GS-09 level you must also possess and maintain ALL the following Department of Defense (or reciprocal equivalent) certification, certified through DoD Fire and Emergency Services Certification System, International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC), or the Fire Service Professional Qualifications System (PRO-Board) in accordance with DoD 6055.06-M.

Must possess and maintain DoD Firefighter Certifications: Fire Officer III Fire Instructor II Fire Inspector II Hazardous Materials Operations Hazardous Materials Incident Command Airport Firefighter First Responder (Emergency Medical Technician) NOTE: You MUST attach a copy of ALL the required certificates to your application package.

Major Duties:

  • Serve as Station Chief with responsibility for the operational readiness and organizational maintenance of firefighting equipment.
  • Assume immediate direction and control of operations at all types of emergency incidents until relieved by an Assistant Chief or the Fire Chief.
  • Employee assists in establishing and updating division policies and procedures.
  • Serve as Shift Training Officer and establishes a training schedule to cover established regulatory requirements.
  • Direct, instruct, and coordinate drills and other scheduled training for assigned crew members.
