Job Description

Summary

This job is for a Deputy Fire Chief at a Navy base in Georgia, where you'll oversee the entire fire department, including fighting fires on ships and land, handling hazardous materials, and managing emergency medical responses, while also leading staff and budgets.

It's ideal for an experienced firefighter with strong leadership skills who thrives in high-stakes, military environments and has all the required certifications.

The role combines hands-on fire operations with administrative duties to keep the base safe.

Key Requirements

  • One year of specialized experience at GS-9 level or equivalent, including directing fire prevention programs, managing department functions like budgets and personnel, overseeing structural/marine firefighting, hazmat, rescue, EMS, and nuclear emergencies
  • Possess Firefighter I and II certifications (National Registry, IFSAC, or ProBoard)
  • Possess Marine Fire Fighter certification (National Registry, IFSAC, or ProBoard)
  • Possess HAZMAT Technician and HAZMAT Incident Commander certifications (National Registry, IFSAC, or ProBoard)
  • Possess Fire Officer IV, Fire Inspector II, and Fire Instructor II certifications (National Registry, IFSAC, or ProBoard)
  • Possess National Registry EMT certification
  • Ability to resolve grievances, handle disciplinary actions, set performance standards, and assign workloads for fire personnel

Full Job Description

You will serve as a Supervisory Firefighter as the Deputy Fire Chief in the Navy Fire & Emergency Services of NAVSUBASE KINGSBAY.

Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-11) or pay band in the federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector performing the following duties: 1) Performing administrative and technical direction of the fire prevention and protection programs for a department or station to ensure long range organizational objectives are met; 2) Directing overall Fire Department functions to include budgets, personnel, equipment, promotional activities, and operational procedures; 3) Providing overall management of a department's structural firefighting, Marine / Shipboard firefighting, hazardous materials program, rescue and emergency medical services, nuclear reactor - radiological emergencies, nuclear surety and ordinance emergencies; and 4) Resolving grievances, effecting disciplinary actions, setting performance standards, and assigning workload for subordinate fire personnel.

***This position requires the incumbent to possess the following certifications: Firefighter I and II, Marine Fire Fighter, HAZMAT Technician, HAZMAT Incident Commander, Fire Officer IV, Fire Inspector II, Fire Instructor II, and National Registry EMT.

These certifications must have been awarded by National Registry, IFSAC or ProBoard to meet the requirement.

  • You will serve as a senior authority and advisor for fire protection for the installation.
  • You will assess and formulate operating expenditures including staffing requirements.
  • You will Interpret new fire protection requirements and recommend the adoption or implementation of applicable policies and procedures.

  • You will prepare fire protection policies for the installation and promulgate directives governing fire protection matters.
  • You will interpret agency fire regulations for fire prevention and fire suppression.
