Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social).
You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: 1) overseeing work in controlling and extinguishing fires, emergency medical and HAZMAT situations 2) distributing, coordinating, and monitoring work assignments of others; and 3) managing, planning, and evaluating the departments fire training program.
This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the first lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-09).

For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone -- no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
Selective Placement Factor: In addition to the specialized experience and/or education required to qualify for the GS-11 level you must also possess and maintain ALL the following Department of Defense (or reciprocal equivalent) certification, certified through DoD Fire and Emergency Services Certification System, International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC), or the Fire Service Professional Qualifications System (PRO-Board) in accordance with DoD 6055.06-M.
Must possess and maintain DoD Firefighter Certifications: Fire Officer III, Fire Inspector II, Hazardous Material Operations, Hazardous Material Technician, Hazardous Material Incident Command, Fire Instructor III.
Firefighting and Emergency Medical Technician (EMT-Basic or higher) certification from the state of New York or National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT).
