This job involves leading a team in a veterinary medical unit at a VA hospital, overseeing the care and maintenance of lab animals used in medical research to keep them healthy and support important studies.
A good fit would be someone with experience managing animal labs, training staff, and handling biological research tasks in a government or healthcare setting.
It requires a mix of hands-on animal care skills and supervisory abilities to ensure smooth operations.
This position is located in the VA Mid-Atlantic Health Care Network in the state of North Carolina at the Durham Veterans Affairs Medical Center (VAMC) in the General Medical Research Service, Veterinary Medical Unit (VMU) under the direction of the Veterinary Medical Officer (VMO).
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 04/13/2026.
Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement.
For a GS-12 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-11. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service.
An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials.
If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement.
In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade.
Note: Time-In-Grade requirements also apply to former Federal employees applying for reinstatement as well as current employees applying for Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998 (VEOA) appointment.
You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below: Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-11 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization.
Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: Directly supervising an animal research laboratory and staff.
Developing and providing advanced level training to staff.
Maintaining healthy pathogen free laboratory animal populations with the use of micro isolator cages, barrier techniques, and enforcement of transfer prohibitions between rooms.
Using proper bleeding, anesthesia, and euthanasia techniques for all species housed in the animal facility Coordinating animal husbandry and caging plans to ensure that the execution of important biomedical projects involving laboratory animals are supported.
AND The Individual Occupational Requirement: For the 0401 Occupational Series you must have A degree in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines OR A Combination of education and experience: Courses equivalent to a major, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

In other situations, such as in a laboratory, there may be special requirements for agility or dexterity such as exceptional hand/eye coordination.
