Job Description

Summary

This job involves leading a team that inspects and grades fresh and processed fruits, vegetables, and related products to ensure quality standards are met, while also managing office operations and personnel.

Key Requirements

  • One year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-09, including inspecting processing equipment, storage conditions, and advising on quality control for agricultural products
  • Skill in applying inspection procedures and techniques to determine product grade and acceptability
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with employees, supervisors, and industry managers
  • Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in Agriculture, Mathematics, Engineering, Science, Business, Economics, or related fields (or 3 years of graduate education leading to such a degree, or LL.M. if related)
  • For current federal employees: 52 weeks of time-in-grade at GS-09 or equivalent
  • Transcripts required if qualifying based on education or combination of education and experience
  • Experience in supervising personnel, assigning work, evaluating performance, and planning operations

Full Job Description

The selected applicant will serve as a Supervisory Agricultural Commodity Grader shares fully with the responsibility for carrying out organization programs, including grading, inspection, certification, and audit-based activities covering fresh and processed fruits and vegetables and related products; and supervising office activities and personnel.

TIME-IN-GRADE: Current federal employees applying for a promotion opportunity must meet time-in-grade (TIG) requirement of 52 weeks of service at the next lower grade level in the normal line of progression for the position being filled.

FOR THE GS-11 LEVEL: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience (equivalent to the GS-09 level) that may have been obtained in the private or public (local, county, state, Federal) sectors which demonstrates: -Inspect or evaluate more complicated processing equipment and procedures, and conditions of storage or transportation and advising industry employees on product quality control methods.

-Applying the procedures, techniques and methods required to determine the grain/rice/grain products' acceptability or grade, and skill in performing various types of inspections.

-Establishing, maintaining, and developing effective interpersonal relationships with employees, operating supervisors, and managers of the grain/rice/grain products processing firms and facilities.

OR Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in Agriculture, Mathematics, Engineering, Science, Business, Economics, or related subjects.

OR 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree e in Agriculture, Mathematics, Engineering, Science, Business, Economics, or related subjects.OR LL.M., if related Equivalent combinations of education and experience are qualifying for this grade level.

This education must have been successfully completed and obtained from an accredited school, college, or university.

COMBINATION OF EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE AT THE GS-11 GRADE LEVEL: Applicants may have combinations of successfully completed education and specialized experience to meet total qualification requirements.

The total percentages must equal at least 100 percent to qualify for that grade level.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social).

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Major Duties:

  • The duties may include, but are not limited to:
  • Assists in the administrative and technical supervision of all personnel in the assigned area.
  • Supervises the sampling, inspection and certification of fresh and processed fruits and vegetables and related products for quality, condition and grade.
  • Assigns subordinate personnel to perform services and coordinates the work in such a manner as to provide prompt, efficient, and timely service.
  • Assists in the establishment of performance standards of subordinates and evaluates their performance.
  • Plans work of subordinates by reviewing area operations in light of changing workloads, types of inspection, volume of work, priority of requests, and other factors.
  • Recommends improvements in inspection procedures, methods, and techniques.
