Summary

This job involves leading a team of accounting technicians to handle financial tasks like managing payments, receivables, and government fund balances in a defense agency.

Key Requirements

  • 52 weeks of time-in-grade at GS-06 or higher (for GS-07) or GS-07 or higher (for GS-08) within the preceding 52 weeks
  • Eligibility as a current permanent DFAS employee, DFAS VRA employee in the local area, or DoD PPP Military Spouse preference applicant
  • Ability to supervise staff, plan work, interpret regulations, and ensure compliance with policies

Full Job Description

Who may apply: Current, permanent DFAS employees in the competitive service, and current DFAS VRA employees in the local commuting area, and eligible DoD PPP Military Spouse preference applicants.

This announcement will be used to fill positions with an entry grade of GS-7, or GS-8 with a target grade of GS-8. This job announcement uses SME Panel to evaluate applicants.

Qualified applicants must possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade (GS-06 for GS-07 level and GS-07 for GS-08 level) in the Federal service, which demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position.

For GS-07: Specialized experience at the GS-07 grade level is defined as: maintaining accounting or financial ledgers; posting financial transactions; preparing accounting reports; reconciling accounts and working with a variety of accounting and financial automated systems.

For GS-08: Specialized experience at the GS-08 grade level is defined as: processing and auditing complex contracts and vendor pay entitlement transactions; reconciling pay system and financial system data; working with a variety of electronic systems to review and resolve pay transaction issues.

GS-07 Time-in-Grade: Current or former federal employees who have held a GS position in the preceding 52 weeks, must meet the time in grade requirement.

Applicant must have served 52 weeks as a GS-06 or higher grade in federal Service.

GS-08 Time-in-Grade: Current or former federal employees who have held a GS position in the preceding 52 weeks, must meet the time in grade requirement.

Applicant must have served 52 weeks as a GS-07 or higher grade in federal Service.

Major Duties:

  • The major duties described below reflect the full performance level of this position:
  • Supervises and directs functions in support of accounting transactions related to accounts payable, accounts receivable, and/or fund balance with treasury for the organization.
  • Responsible for the review of documents for validity, expenditure limitation, and correct accounting data; balancing and maintaining the subsidiary ledgers; performing reconciliation of un-liquidated contractual obligations.
  • Oversees the accomplishment of technical work in accordance with policy, directives, regulations, and reporting requirements. Interprets regulations, requirements, and policies to ensure compliance.
  • Trains and assists lower level accounting technicians with techniques to correct and process accounting inputs. Ensures accuracy, propriety, and legality of accounting transactions through extensive review of documents.
  • Plans and schedules work to be accomplished; sets and adjusts short-term priorities for completion of work. Assigns/reassigns work to subordinates based on priorities, the difficulty and requirements of assignments and capabilities of subordinates.
  • Responsible and accountable for assigned program areas including the development, documentation, and operation of both internal processes and administrative, technical, and automated systems controls.
