The Colorado Mental Health Institute at Fort Logan (CMHHIFL) is one of two state hospitals serving our community. The vision of CMHHIFL is to provide the highest quality mental health services to persons with complex, serious, and persistent mental illness within the resources available. Our mission is to support those individuals in achieving their recovery goals and reaching their full potential. CMHHIFL provides inpatient treatment to adult patients, generally between the ages of 18-59. The hospital currently has 138 adult inpatient beds, over six treatment milieus serving civil and forensic individuals. Medical services, occupational therapy, neuropsychological-rehabilitation services, and trauma-informed care services are available for all patients throughout the hospital.
The Medical Services Section exists to promote and protect the health of patients and staff by overseeing, providing, and coordinating all medically related care and clinical analyses necessary for the proper evaluation and treatment of the hospital’s patients, and by managing the infection control and employee health programs.

This position performs standardized sterile processing functions and assists with Central Medical Supply operations. The position functions as a technical resource for sterile processing practices, instrument reprocessing, sterilization methods, and instrument quality standards. The position provides technical expertise to support equipment readiness, assists with preventive maintenance activities related to Sterile Processing Department and Central Medical Supply equipment, assists with durable medical equipment managed through Central Medical Supply, and supports compliance with Joint Commission and other applicable regulatory standards. Other duties include:

Sterile Processing Department Operations:
  • Performs advanced sterile processing functions for the hospital, including the full reprocessing cycle of reusable medical instruments and equipment in accordance with established hospital policies, procedures, manufacturer instructions for use, and applicable regulatory and professional standards.
  • Performs required testing of sterilization equipment and products, maintains documentation of testing and results, and applies Joint Commission, AAMI, CMS, and other applicable standards to ensure sterile processing activities are completed accurately and consistently to support patient safety.
  • Maintains surveillance of the sterile processing environment for breaks in aseptic technique and maintains competency with instrumentation and equipment while providing technical expertise to support a clean, compliant, and safe Sterile Processing Department environment.
Central Medical Supply & Durable Medical Equipment Support:
  • Provides technical support to the Central Medical Supply Supervisor related to Central Medical Supply operations and durable medical equipment.
  • Assists with supply readiness, equipment tracking, preventive maintenance coordination, safety checks, documentation, and procurement support in accordance with manufacturer guidelines, regulatory standards, and established procedures.
Standards and Quality Support :
  • Supports adherence to applicable sterile processing, infection prevention, central medical supply, and durable medical equipment standards by maintaining documentation, monitoring changes in regulatory and professional guidance, assisting with policy and procedure review activities, and supporting unit-level quality checks and internal audits.
  • Maintains current knowledge of applicable AAMI, CMS, Joint Commission, and manufacturer standards and provides technical input to support consistent, safe, and compliant operations.
Other Duties As Assigned:
  • Performs other related duties as assigned to support Sterile Processing operations, Central Medical Supply functions, infection prevention practices, and hospital regulatory readiness, and continuity of Medical Services Department operations.
  • Provides cross-coverage support within the Medical Services Department as needed to support continuity of operations, consistent with the employee’s scope of practice, training, and competency.

Qualifications

Education/Licensure/Certification/Experience:
  • Associate’s degree from an accredited institution in a field of study related to the work assignment

  • Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) or Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution (CBSPD)

  • One (1) year of professional experience in an occupational field related to the work assigned to the position

Substitutions:
  • Additional appropriate experience will substitute for the degree requirement on a year-for-year basis

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience in sterile processing, central medical supply, or medical equipment handling

  • Experience with cleaning, disinfection, and sterilization of reusable medical instruments or equipment

  • Experience following standardized procedures, infection prevention practices, and manufacturer instructions for use (IFUs)

  • Experience maintaining basic documentation, logs, or records

  • Current certification in sterile processing (e.g., CRCST, CBSPD)

  • Knowledge of sterile processing practices and infection prevention principles

  • Ability to follow standardized procedures and manufacturer instructions for use (IFUs)

  • Attention to detail in identifying instrument defects (e.g., damage, corrosion)

  • Ability to maintain accurate documentation and logs

  • Basic knowledge of regulatory standards (e.g., Joint Commission, AAMI)

  • Strong organizational and communication skills

  • Ability to work independently, proactively, and collaboratively within a clinical setting

  • Previous State Experience

Conditions of Employment:

  • Motor Vehichle Check
  • Must possess a valid, non-restricted Colorado Driver’s License or a non-restricted U.S. Driver's License for positions within 30 miles of the CO state border

  • Out-of-State Driver’s License holders must obtain a valid, non-restricted Colorado Driver’s License within 30 days of employment start date.

  • May be exposed to bodily fluids or caustic chemicals - SPD Cleaning Chemicals.

  • May drive CDHS equipment to/from vendors and drive a state vehicle.

  • A 2-step TB (tuberculosis) screening is required of all new employees upon hire.

  • Annual influenza plus any other vaccinations as required by the State of Colorado.

  • Full Background CDHS employees (all Direct contact with vulnerable persons):
    CBI name check and fingerprint check, ICON Colorado court database, Medicare fraud database, Reference Checks, Professional License verification (licensure requirements), Drug Screen, PREA (Division of Youth Services),Trails check (direct contact with children), CAPS (direct contact with adults – Mental Health Institutes, Regional Centers, Veterans Community Living Centers)

  • Former State employees who were disciplinarily terminated or resigned in lieu of termination must:

    • Disclose that information on the application.

    • Explain why the prior termination or resignation should not disqualify you from the current position.

    • Provide your employee number from your prior State employment. Absent extraordinary circumstances, prior disciplinary termination or resignation in lieu of termination and failure to provide this information will disqualify the applicant from future State employment with CDHS.
