Job Description

Summary

This job involves running and fixing large machinery like boilers, pumps, and generators in city facilities such as pumping stations or power plants to keep public works running smoothly.

It's a hands-on role for someone who enjoys mechanical work and can handle high-pressure equipment safely.

A good fit would be an experienced technician with the right license who lives in or is willing to move to Pittsburgh and has a clean driving record.

Operates and maintains equipment in high-pressure plants or pumping stations, including boilers, pumps, generators, switch gear, valves, and related machinery and equipment.

Union: This position is included in the Pittsburgh Joint Collective Bargaining Committee and will be filled in accordance with the provisions of the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

Qualifying Requirements:
Your City of Pittsburgh application will be reviewed, and your work experience and education/training will be evaluated to determine if you meet the qualifying eligibility requirements listed below for this position. You will be sent an eligibility letter regarding your eligible/ineligible status.
  • WORK EXPERIENCE: The application must clearly show two (2) years of full-time experience as a Stationary Engineer. (Less than full-time experience will be calculated on a pro-rated basis.)
  • EDUCATION/TRAINING: The application must clearly show a Stationary Engineer License.
  • EQUIVALENCY: None permitted for this position. Therefore, no education/training and/or work experience may be substituted toward the qualifying requirements listed above.

Qualifications

If you meet the qualifying requirements listed above, you will be sent a letter of admission (when applicable) for the following examination(s).  You must pass the written and/or performance examination(s) in order to have your name placed on the official Civil Service eligibility list for this position.  Candidates who receive job offers must pass a medical examination (when applicable) prior to start date.

Additional Information

  • Blows down low and high-pressure boilers.
  • Reads, interprets, and monitors gauges on air conditioners, indicating and recording instruments and other related equipment.
  • Performs and/or assists in maintenance and equipment repair work.
  • Tests water and adds chemicals as necessary.
  • Inspects machinery (e.g., boilers, pumps, valves, generators, switch gears, and related machinery) to detect faulty operations; makes minor adjustments to and lubricates equipment, including washing and changing oil and refrigeration filters.
  • Cleans filters, air handlers, air conditioning tower, condenser tubes, sump, and boiler site glasses as needed; lubricates fans and motors; checks equipment belts and drives.
  • Runs standby generators in case of emergency.
  • Assists and/or coordinates work with other trades as assigned or required.
  • Drives a City vehicle as needed or required.
  • Uses a variety of technological hardware (i.e., computers, laptops, tablets, smart phones, GPS, cameras, etc.) and/or software (i.e., email, Cartegraph, Microsoft Office, etc.) to maintain records and prepare accurate reports on work performed.
  • Performs such other related tasks and duties that are assigned or required.
  • May work all three shifts, weekends, and holidays.
